Hi friends,

It occurred to me after reading several posts regarding Lee factory crimp dies not working with Hornady brass, that this is something we at RPP could help out with. As many of you already know, the standard factory crimp dies do not work with shortened LVR brass, particularly those in .444 and .45-70. But many of you also know how very useful the factory crimp dies are, especially if you are loading cast boolits. The factory crimp die has enough crimping force (without damaging the case) to make a new crimp groove in lead. They're terrific dies, and I use them exclusively on my loading bench.

If you're sitting on a pile of expensive LVR brass you can't use, and you prefer the Lee crimp die to Hornady's, then chime in and let us know if there is any demand for Lee factory crimp dies that have been modified for use with 444 and 45-70 LVR brass. If so, I'll be happy to order up a stack of the dies and cut them for you. It's done easily enough on our lathe, but for most folks that's not much of an option. I have a modified set that works perfectly with both calibers.

If there is demand, we can make 'em, and pass them on to you for the modest sum of $17.50 plus S&H. This is just a few bucks more than most places want for the unmodified die, and if you're sitting on a couple boxes of brass, the crimp die will pay for itself first time out. What y'all think?

Best,

If you ever decide to make 308 ME or 338 ME Lee Factory Crimp Dies--there are a bunch of us that would be interested in that too.

Great idea R E. Lee makes factory crimp dies for the .308 win and .338 federal, and both those cases are slightly longer than their respective ME counterparts. Should be a cinch to trim them in the same manner as the 444 and .45-70 dies. Anyone else interested chime in here. I'll start a second thread under the .308/.338 forum too. Thanks for the heads up!

A quick question if I might?
When you modify the Lee die will it still be usable with regular RP, WW,& Starline brass?
I remember we used to use .44 Special dies to load .44 Mag. by just moving them up in the press.
Would your altered dies work similarly?
Thanks.

Unfortunately the factory crimp dies don't interchange with brass of various length, as they crimp at a predetermined length from the case head (or actually shell holder). That's why the standard crimp dies won't work with LVR brass. They simply attempt to crimp above the case mouth, on the bullet's ogive.

I recently contacted LEE about FC die for the 444 and 45-70 using the Hornady FTX heads. I sent them (as requested) both the standard LFC dies and they cut them down so I could use them when crimping the shorter cases loaded with the FTX heads. They really worked great. The cost was $15 each . Their customer service is top notch and quick to reply to your questions and concerns. I suppose if you had access to the right tools/equipment you could do it yourself. Just my 2 cents.

On second thought i'm going to pass on the .45-70 crimp die. I just remembered I had bought 250 starlines with shipping due on the 22nd and I just got a notice saying it shipped.
I have 20 LVR of which I shot all but 6 and I've already reloaded them 2X before I heard about shortfalls of case length. Since I'm up to 500 gr bullets for my 1895 and I them one at a time in competition I start them by hand and establish my seating depth without the seating pin screwed into the top of the die. There is so much bullet in the case that I don't have to worry about crimping as I seat the ogive in the lands.

Gents,

I wouldn't call it a clamor, but I never expected it to be a million dollar idea, so I think there's enough interest to warrant ordering up a handful of each caliber and turning them on the lathe. I'll get my web slinger to put the dies into the shopping page so you can order as soon as they're available. Keep raising hands if you're an interested party so I can anticipate demand. Thanks for your feedback!

When I first purchased my 45-70. It came with a bunch a brass, RCBS dies, 1 partial, 1 sealed box of FTX projectiles. After inspecting the brass. I found out about the short brass. After doing some searching and reading. Found special Hornady dies or the grinding length of standard dies. My fix was to just remove the shell holder during the crimp process. Taper Crimp. Gave me the extra I needed. Sure it can stick and that is what the shell holder is for. But were talking about is a ring of brass about a 1/8" long that is stuck. And since the bullet base is up against the die now. I use a plastic picnic knife to pry it lose. Keeping my hand under the casing to catch it. I have not broke a plastic knife edge. Have done about 50 so far.
I have also mentioned to Cast Boolit Mold makers to put another Crimp Groove to accommodate the Short Brass syndrome.
