I hope this is an acceptable place to post considering this is question about a Marlin copy and not a real Marlin but if so anyone tell me when the JC Higgins 103.229 was made or why there are many variants on the 103.xxx? Are they all mechanically the same? I Googled but apparently there isn't a lot of history on the model dates and designations. Best I could find is that it could be from 1937-1947 or possibly as late as 1961.

Short story if you're interested.... I had one stolen years ago and wanted another exactly like it, right down to the sanded and re-stained wooden stock, so when I found this at an auction I took a chance and picked it up for $76. With a little clean up and a new Walmart\Simmons scope it''s incredibly accurate. It's nothing fancy by any stretch. The bluing bluing is about gone but the barrel isn't rusty, just shiny like an old knife, but it's a honest shooter and I couldn't be happier with it.

Thanks

With yours being the lower 103.2** number, I'd go 1955 to 1956. No exact science in finding actual distribution date -- different books, different dates.
A values book shows the Sears catalog number 103.229 was made for Sears from 1955 to 1959....56,966 total.

I appreciate the info, and especially learning that it is a real Marlin. I had heard chatter about that before but wasn't sure until I saw the link by BulletBait.

This is a pic for those who like gun pics. Nothing special but right now I like it more than my Mod 60. I shot the 1 inch dots out of my target at about 35-40 yards which is about all I can ask. I sanded and stained the wood only because I like the feel of wood better than the shallaque or whatever it had. It's too old to be made pretty again but this will work for what I want. It's really not as spotted as it looks in the pic. I was fidgeting with the lights.

Many thanks!
