Congrats to the grandson.
Our #2 grandson scored his first this past season,
then he continued on and got 2 more.
First was a doe, then a decent size 5 point that one side had been broken then another doe.
He was just as tickled with one as he was with any other.
What a joy it was to watch and be a part of.
I have one of those JC Higgins, but mine is a 35R.
Nice rifle.

Your grandson called it a sniper rifle because in video games only (mostly) sniper rifles have scopes. My son would refer to any gun, including my scoped rifled shotgun or in-line muzzle loader as sniper rifles for this reason. Congrats to the little sniper!

That sling was probably also the drag rope

Excellent. The high-tech sling on that Higgins is entertaining to see. I actually saw that sort of technology one time in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia in the mid-1980s. I and my buddies walked out of the woods back to our trucks right it very near dark. A rough looking guy came out of the woods as well; none of us had seen him in the woods all day. "Rough looking" is a descriptive term for when you suddenly hear dueling guitar and banjo music. All of the guys in our hunting posse knows what each other is carrying, we were gun and hunting people. Most of the rifles in those woods is a .30-30, .35 Rem, or .308 or .30-06. The rough looking guy was carrying a Winchester Model-70 in .257 Roberts caliber, and the sling on that collector's rifle was a piece of hemp rope. Back in the woods we all had seen an illegal bait pile of several dead pigs, so we instantly concluded that Mr. rough looking guy was probably responsible for the bear bait. One of our group on our way back to the cabin stopped at the game warden's house to report what we had discovered in the woods, and a description of the man with the rope sling on a .257 Roberts. The rifle and rope sling was known to the game warden and he knew who the guy is; he had busted that guy before.

Thanks for a wonderful story, congratulations on the deer.

You and the boy made some wonderful memories.

...and that 'ol J.C. Higgins-Marlin did exactly what it's supposed to. Proly will, too for the next 100 years.
