What year did Marlin put the cross-bolt safety on the 1894 ?

I wish I used my crossbolt more. Be careful guys. There are conditions, as with any firearm, that special care must be taken because of the nature of the firearm. Levers are no exception, and for me held some mysteries that I was not aware of that cause 3 NGs. Safety rule #1 saved everybodys day once but could not stop the ribbing and embaracement, the other two times I was alone so the ribbing was negated but that is all. Use of the crossbolt would have prevented all three but knowing the firearm better, would have too.

When I managed to get a 357 cartridge stuck in the chamber of my 1894 I was happy to have the cross bolt safety. I had been shooting specials and neglected to clean the chamber before loading a magnum. Lesson learned and I also gained an appreciation for the cross bolt safety. It's there when I need it and doesn't interfere when I don't.

My Marlins don't have the CBS.

But I find myself always wishing that my hunting partner's Marlin's did. Esp when they are lowering the hammer with cold, wet fingers....

I think many of us can admit that the CBS is something we want "the other guy" to have and use. Even if we don't use it ourselves...

I don't understand why there is such resistance to using the cross bolt safety. When i'm hunting I keep it off and use the half cock safety,at the end of the day when I have to lever out my cartridges it is on.I hunt northern NH. and it is usually subfreezing temps and I can see where cold fingers could cause a problem.I rather like having the added bit of safety .People just hate change I guess.

i like the CBS because it allows a safety feature for getting kids into marlins. i trained myself to use it like this

see deer - cock hammer with CBS engaged, then when the decision to shoot is made, use the safety like you do on a bolt gun. if you decide not to shoot, uncock with CBS engaged. the only time i dry fire is very occasionally on the range. i have gotten probably 15 deer in the past 10 or so years without a misfire. i love the old marlins but actually wish they had a CBS. my win 94 450 has a tang safety and i like it best. it would be nice if marlin was able to do that.

I grew up using Marlins prior to the CBS. My objection to them is mostly from what I've read on internet forums.
This is the most realistic string covering this topic that I've read.
I now own Marlins both with and without the CBS. I appreciate both. I'm more comfortable around other shooters if they have the CBS!

I like the CBS, and would never have it removed. However I can understand those who don't and there is nothing wrong with that. If I didn't care for it the best "safety delete" is a tiny o-ring to prevent it from getting bumped before heading out on a hunt. Then there isn't quite as much of a liability issue as there is with its removal..
