Well...I got dad out in the woods of PA today. He's almost 79 and has both knees repaired and an artificial hip, and a pacemaker/defib unit implanted...but we've been hunting partners for 43 years. It was nice to have him out with me today. Unfortunately he didn't see any deer.

Anyway...I was hunting a ravine on the far side from a winter wheat field when about 3pm 11 deer broke across the field right for the ravine. I watched them hit the wood lot one by one and funnel past me. I selected a nice big fat doe and took my harvest.

I had always wanted a 35 Remington since I was about 14 years old...I finally made that dream come true last August. I purchased a 1981 336. Nothing real fancy, a bit dinged up by the previous owner but it was definitely a working man's gun. It did exactly what it was intended to do...take game.

The doe dropped in a brier/alder thicket. I had to break a lot of branches just to get to her and even then everytime I'd move my hat was removed from my head by the brush. It took 15 minutes to dress her...then took 45 minutes to drag her the 40 yards back to the field through all those briers...I'm a bit cut up and sore...but meat is meat...sometimes you gotta work for it.

I got dad out again today. Today was a little more exciting for him...but still no deer harvest.

He saw 4 deer but all were 50 yards back in the thick brush. No way to get a good shot. He saw a hawk, woodpeckers and a beautiful Red Fox. The fox excited him the most. He said it just glowed when he ran into a sunbeam.

He got pretty cold today though. He could hardly walk back to the truck at the end of the day (50 yards from the "smokehouse") I did have the propane heater running for him this afternoon though...we forgot it first thing this morning. He said that helped.

Anyway...he wants to go again Friday (he needs a full day to recoup after a hunt now) I'm so glad I'll be able to take him out. I know I don't have many more years before he won't be able to get out at all.

And...if you've not read some of my other posts....I have an agreement with my dad...if he shoots one, I'll track, dress and drag it for him. A few years ago (maybe 6 years) he got a doe from the smokehouse. He got to the deer down in the ravine and got down on his knees to dress it. Then he couldn't get back up. He crawled to the nearest tree and pulled himself back up. It was then that I got the call. It was the first time my dad realized he couldn't hunt by himself any longer. Ever since then...the agreement has been in place. As long as he can still get out...I'll always be willing to take him....whatever it takes.
