How do you guys carry extra ammo? I have a buttstock shell holder that holds 9 rounds but I need more. On my last hunt I shot 40+rounds in the first 2 hours. I didnt like having dead piglets all around in thick brush and only 3 bullets left.

As goofey as it sounds I wear a fast draw rig with 25 loops when I hunt ! I always carry a .44 mag sbh and my 1894 or .444 . I put 10 .444 rounds in the loops and load the rest with .44 mag ;D Still working on how to carry extra 45-70 as I dont want to strech out the loops !

Re: CARTRIGE BELT???

I use a cartridge belt. to save $ and solve carry more ammo it all came together one day. I cut leather strips to fit snugly in 20ga shell belt loops to hold 45-70 perfectly. i now have dual purpose 18ct shell belt. strips can go behind ammo (looks cool) or in front of (concealment/no brass flash). i also added easily removable belt extension to wear over coveralls/heavy clothing. am very pleased w/set-up, works great. another option is belt slide or ammo carrier. i just used what i had on hand.

Re: CARTRIGE BELT???

I had my pockets filled but they were jingling like a set of spurs. And it was hard to get the rounds out. Ive found some belts online ranging from $30 to $400  The one cabelas carries has bad reivews. So I was hoping yall knew of one that works well and wont break the bank. I know thats a lot of ammo to shoot but its a target rich enviroment. Usualy only carry a box never shot the whole thing till I started hunting this place. I think I found one I like at midway.

Re: CARTRIGE BELT???

I like the Cartridge belt, but have used various pouches and wrist belts to carry ammunition.

See the following:

Web Cartridge Belt (have one for my 50-70 works well) The wrist belt I use with my 45-70, minimal maintenance and no worry about a cartridge case corroding due to extended contact with leather.

McKeever Cartridge Box:

You can haul a lot of ammo in one GI canvas pouch. They are 2.5DX4.5WX6H that would hold more than a brick of .22s, at least three boxes of 30-30s.

Figure reaching in a pouch to reload would be faster than belt loops, the plastic loops that come with factory ammo can have the belt extensions cut off for more room and less noise if you want that route.

When you are out tracking all day I want the weight on my hips. When you have bullet loops on your sling and on a cheek piece the weight is on the rifle which will in your arms which will tire faster than on your hips. I do like the look of a cheek piece but for the all day walk, nobody will see me. "Big Bucks the Benoit Way" these books explain how to travel light when tracking.

Yes this is why Im switching my montana sling to the IBD Sling System just let the weapon hang till you need it.

And I really like those leather cartridge belts but $100+ dollars whew. I called up a buddy in the prison system going to get an inmate to make me one they do suprisingly excellent work on a budget I can afford.

I have 3" leather belt made by Sharps that holds like 53 rounds of 45-70's but they are very expensive. Canvas belts are also made for much less $$$ and are less weight.

The leather belts are nice and properly cared for will last, but the Web/Cloth belts are perhaps the best, in my opinion, no need to get worried if they get wet or dirty, hang them up, let dry, brush off the dirt and they are good to go and should you forget about them and leave a few rounds in it, they won't be green by next season.

The Prairie belt gives you 40 rounds add a McKeever pouch for another 20 rounds and a wrist sling gives you 6 more and you are ready for the rampaging hordes of swine, prairie dog.....

I use a 3" gun belt. I carry a 4 5/8" Blackhawk .45 Colt on the left side, a cartridge box for .45 is also
on the left. I have a cartridge box for 10 extra 45/70 on the right side.
(I used to loose a few shells .45s & 45/70s that would fall out of stretched loops. I went to the boxes for security of ammo. It's not as fast as a loop, but, I know my ammo will be there when I want it...)

I can empty the .45 colt box and stuff it with .44 mags, and grab an identical .44 and stuff
it in the same holster.
I can empty my 45/70 box and stuff it with .444s and carry my old .444.
I like a simple set up... :)

You know, up till about 3 weeks ago I would have mocked you for going through that many rounds, but I hunted out of a swamp buggy a few weeks back and I ran out of ammo in my 45-70 the first morning hunt. So I had to use my 1911 untill I got back to the camp to load up. I was lucky I brought 3 rifles. I only had 20 rounds per rifle, when I ran out I had to changed rifles. I lost count of how many hogs I killed at 15. I killed them with 3 different rifles and a 45 handgun. It was nuts. They wanted every hog on the property dead, which will never happen. They say for every hog you leave alive, there will be 30 next year.

To answer your question, I use a leather cartridge carrier that holds 20 and keep more in my Bino Chest pack. It has pockets on each side that makes getting to them VERY easy.

I loathe cartridge belts or bandoleers. Cartridges are unprotected from dirt and impact denting.

I have a bunch, probably more than I need, of McKeever Cartridge boxes. Footprint on my belt is slight. Ammunition is completely protected while being quickly and silently accessible. And the McKeever accepts all cartridges I might carry - 44 Magnum through 45-70.

Here are thumbnails of the McKeever.

This is what I use. It's handy since I carry a SAA 45 and 1895CB. The loops fit either round. At this price you can buy two or three for the price of one of the lines ones. I'm ordering a second one now since my better half has a 1895G. You can load up a few of them and stuff the extra ones coiled up in a back pack, etc.

My only problem is enough reloading time to keep a few of them filled with both of us using 45-70.
