Anybody know of a shop here in Southern California (From LA/San Bernardino and south) that sells Black Powder. Seems the last local business is no longer. If not, anybody mail order BP into California and what is the catch! Also, who from. Been away from it a while as I have mentioned before. Found I can only have in possession one pound (felony) if I can find it. Thanks.

John

PS. Do not want pyrodex/substitute.

Holy smokes! (Ok slight pun intended) . CA is a big state, like you don't know that, and no where, even way up north is there an in state dealer. Just a bit in shock is all. Ok the guys here may be able to give you a name and address of an in state retailer. If not, I would call the powder maker direct, tell them what you shoot, that you use their product and that your supplier just went out of business. Ask them who carries their product in state. If they say no ine ask if you can just buy direct from them and have it shipped in. I would also give your local fish and game guys a call and see if any of them has a work around or see an issue with you buying direct. It might take a few calls between you powder maker, fish and game and even the local sheriff to work it all out. Sad to say but be prepared if you get asked to fill out forms to get waivers or exemptions for direct shipment. As I guess you know better than most you have to be careful also on definitions as apparently under state law out there they may define bp substitutes as smokeless which has different rules for possesion apparently than bp. Best of luck.

Don't rely on anyone in law enforcement to actually know the intricacies of the law. Invest some cash in legal advice from a lawyer. I've a good friend in Ohio who is an ex-con. His county sheriff assured him he could own a percussion revolver. Either the sheriff didn't know the law or he was trying to set up my buddy. I foiled the attempt. He might be able to get by with a single-shot or double barrel pistol but still can't possess explosives and/or detonators.

This may or may not be of help: https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/pdf/cfl2016.pdf

Thanks gary, Lancaster is not 'next door' but doable. The 'law' for now is clear on the one pound possession. It seems, the retailors did not want to deal with the storage/paperwork hassle. Obviously California's intent, as with everything firearms here. Was hoping one of you have dealt with the California hazardous shipping thing. Anyway, would do the drive just to avoid all the hassle. Thanks, I'll try that number.

Interestingly, all the local gun shops tell me they still can't answer in detail the up coming new ammo, gun laws. California still has not figured out what they will do, but they will do something. I hate .............well, you know.

What a pain in the ass, to drive from Ontario to Lancaster, over the pass, to get only one pound of BP.
John I hate it for you!
There's gotta be something closer.
Maybe get some locally from the bomb maker for MS-13?

Things have really changed here Blaine. 'Real' gun shops far and few, traffic has become unbelievable. Trip up to Bass Pro in Rancho? Forget the freeway, surface streets are faster, or seems that way. Dead stop or 20 jammed intersections, your choice. .....................Soon buddy, I hope.

Sheesh.
Sounding like Chicago area, where you measure distance in hours not miles.
Might be 3-miles away, but it'll take 2-hrs to get there.
Otherwise, Lancaster is not close to you.
Just keep hanging in there until you can bail out!

I lived in California from 1967 to 2001. And from what I observed and heard anti-firearms advocates say and do, limiting Black powder is just part and parcel of California's "war on guns." That is, make it difficult/burdensome for firearms owners/potential owners to purchase firearms, reloading components, factory ammunition, hunt, utilize public/private shooting ranges, etc., and shooters will eventually just give up and find another hobby.

Thanks Ray for the tip. Ultimately through W. A. Murphy, I got in touch with Oscars Gunworks (see web page) in San Gabriel. Not next door but I'll take it. .........Right Tim, I was told that the 'one pound' restriction is not in effect by the above gun shop. .......? It is however still cited on some web cites. ..........California! :banghead:

Thanks all.

JMAG54: what is the limit?
Right Ray, good question. I'll be trying to establish this to my satisfaction. Interestingly, the ammunition purchase/possession laws are to change here in California the beginning of July, that much is widely known here. Yet, two of my trusted ammo/gun dealers cannot at this time tell me what the final rule will be. It is ridiculous. California is stumbling all over itself to enact restrictions so much so, that final ruling is yet not decided! One thing 'all' the dealers assure me, it will increase the cost of ammunition due to the process of the purchase itself which will require documentation at the point of 'each' sale.............They 'will' document/track (control) the ammunition we will purchase. Rumors abound.

The 25 pound limit on shipping was due to Black Powder being classed as an explosive. This required a special heavy cardboard box to ship in. Only came in one size. I do not what current shipping laws are as you can buy small lots.
Also since Black powder is an Explosive to sell it requires an explosive dealers license.
Yet around here a LOT of vacant small stores are selling fireworks up to the 4th of July.:dontknow:

Kinda makes me wonder if it's an EPA / CARB thing, like they did with 2-cycle engines.
Otherwise, I've never seen a BP assault rifle.

Steve: has it right about Black Powder classified as an explosive. And if memory serves me, that classification was a result of the violent 1960's, the Gun Control Act of 1968, and the creation of ATF.

I purchase my Black Powder (KIK) from Powder Inc. -- https://powderinc.com/black-powder. From the Powder Inc. on-line catalogue:

"Prices shown are per pound. The price per pound will change depending on how many pounds you purchase. Powder is sold in 5, 10, and 25-lb. lots. You may mix grades and brands within the 5, 10, or 25-lb. lot limit. There is a maximum limit of 50 lbs. (two 25-lb. lots) per order.

"Prices include shipping and Haz-mat fee."
