Bishop Ammunition offers a 458 SOCOM conversion for Marlins. New barrel and custom bolt. Has anybody done this or know anybody who has?

I wouldn't do that conversion since my 444 Marlins and 45-70s pack more of a punch than the 458 SOCOM. These Marlins also can be loaded downward if you roll your own ammo.

Agree ^^^^^^^

A 530 gr 40-1 soft led paper patched over TrailBoss in a 45-70 will perform better than a jacketed 458 SOCOM at subsonic fps. Soft 40-1 alloy will expand to 60 caliber, retain weight, and penetrate.

One of my favorites for the 45-70. On the other end, a 230gr 45 Colt traditional cowboy cast design with paper patch over 2,000 fps. Mild recoil easy shooting and all you need to roll Big Bore silhouettes.

Accurate Molds

Pappy, can you get that 530 grainer to feed and chamber in an 1895? What’s your overall length? I’m starting to mess with heavy bullets for my new to me 1895cb but I keep reading about how difficult it is within the COAL limitations of the 95.

To the OP, can’t really answer your question regarding the conversion. I do love my Tromix SOCOM…in my opinion it’s the best big bore AR cartridge, is inherently accurate, fun to load for and frankly is the only “black” rifle I have any interest in (although 400 Legend looks intriguing). But, there wouldn’t be much advantage to putting it in a lever gun. You wouldn’t be able to load it much beyond the 35k pressure limit of the AR platform in any event. So unless you are just going for the cool/novelty factor (which I’ll admit is a good enough reason) you might be better off in a bolt gun where you can turn the pressure up and really let the SOCOM stretch its legs.

Well, I don't hand load. Factory ammo only. But with the SOCOM in an 1895, you do get more capacity in the mag tube. Rimless cartridge vs rim for the 45-70. Shoots slightly softer. Feeds better. And factory ammo is slightly cheaper. But... gotta factor in the cost of the conversion in the first place. So it doesn't really pay for itself.

After looking at it, I have to admit that it’s pretty appealing, if expensive. At that barrel length the ballistic gap between the cartridges isn’t as great as it would be with a 22 inch barrel. And 8 rounds, with presumably a shorter lever stroke, is a lot of firepower in a handy, compact package.

Do you have a donor rifle, or would you just buy the whole package from them?
