Which peep sights would you recommend for the Marlin 1895G/GBL? Thanks.

K Williams – being as a peep sight is just a hole, ghost ring or aperture.
It really comes down to a personal taste on what you think looks good and does what you want.

Having shot the XS & Skinner peeps on other rifles, when choosing a sight for my GBL, I went with the WWG peep.

there are several good set ups available from folks that help sponsor our site. I have a Skinner Tactical on my 1895 GS in 45-70. I was able to save and use the factory sight, it was very close to being just the right height. However, the factory site has a pretty big bead, it completely covered 6" target at 100 yd. so I swapped it out for a Skinner front post. At 50 yds, I can put nice groups together, at 75 yds I am still inside the 6 in circle, but the front post is starting to get fuzzy, at 100 yd, I do not have good confidence, I just am not that reliable at a 100 yet. The skinner front post is all brass and I am thinking about maybe dabing on some black and see if that helps me pick up the front site.

Lack of elevation adjustment concern

I personally like the looks of the Skinner Express in "black gold" and will probably replace the front sight as well. I have the 1895 GBL in blue and like the looks.

That said, I am concerned that there is no elevation adjustment. Is this a problem at different ranges and with different loads?

I reload for this caliber (45-70) going anywhere from 300 to 405 gr bullets (jacketed Barnes to Laser cast) and from standard "target" (traditional 45-70 loads) to "bear" loads. Any comments on lack of elevation adjustment?

What - if any - is the advantage of the "tactical" sight?

I prefer a receiver mount for the added sight radius over a barrell mount.

I, too, have the Skinner barrel mounted peep. I have my scope mounted with high rings Warne QD rings so that it clears the peep. This is the only way I could get the scope and the peep on the gun at the same time without going to a scout mount. I do not like the scout mount. This setup works well for me.

Oberhaz, I have a Leupold VX II 2 X 7 x 33. I tried medium rings, but they would not clear the peep and leave me any kind of adjustment. The scope may be mounted a little high for some, but it seems OK to me. I will try to get a picture posted sometime today. I actually had one, but the quality was too bad to send.

If that is the scope without a bell on it, it may work, but I suspect you will have to go to medium rings.

I have the guide gun set as well, and love it! I did need to make a higher front sight than the one that came with the set though.

I also have a skinner on my 336 30-30 and am happy with it

I used a Williams FP receiver mounted peep sight on my guide gun for a while. Seemed pretty solid and was adjustable for windage and elevation with "clicks" to let you know how much you had adjusted. It had interchangeabe size "peeps" as well. I was happy with it in the thicker texas brush I was hog hunting at the time. Sold it to a member here if I remember right.

tactical has wings on the side of the sight to protect it. Willliams is another option, it is easy to adjust for differnt loads. I have the skinner brass on my gg, with a brass front sight as well, shows up well on animals and gives a couple minutes more of shooting time at dawn and dusk.

If you are interested in an XS lever Rail i have a brand new one for sale i just mounted it on the rifle and took it off. it looks really sharp but im not in the market for a scope so i removed it and ordered skinners, haven't received them yet but from what i read there good. However keep in mind you might need to do some filing and fitting to get the sights accurate, but its like that for any peeps i suppose.

I have the Skinner Tactical (winged) set on my GBL.

When I first put it on and took it to the range to sight it in, I shot 3 rounds before adjusting it any. I walked downrange (100 yards) and found two holes dead center, 1 1/4" apart. The job was done. I locked the sights into position and then did some plinking.

This was probably a fluke, but the sights are very nice! click on images to enlarge.
