Hi,
anyone loading the Berry Bullets 150g 30-30 bullets ?
I'm looking for what you use for powder and what you favorite load ?

somebody said they love 20G RL7 with the copper plated 150g Flat hollow point from Berry

Thank for your info

Should be the same as any other 150 gn given seat depth.
Remember those plated bullets are only rated to 1500 fps - or so they say.

I use these for fun plinking ammo. Recoil and report is not much more than a 22 lr. I use whatever brass/primers I have at the time and Unique powder. I’d have to look at my notes, but off the top of my head, I think I use 8.0 grains. Great gallery load. Just don’t crimp hard or your crush the plating. And as already stated, don’t load them like you would a jacketed bullet. They aren’t rated for that.

If I'm gonna utilize an expensive and hard to find primer and a case full of expensive and hard to find rifle powder, I'm gonna use it on a real jacketed bullet. Many years ago, when I 1st started reloading, I tried some Speer 100 gn "Plinkers" (half jacket) in my bolt action .308 and the accuracy was horrible, but later realized why. Came to the same conclusion about wasting powder, primers and range time firing those worthless little things.

I have powders and pounds that cost me $7 a pound and primers that were $15.99 a 1000 a few boxes and I'm 64 years old

If you only want to shoot jacketed bullets you go right a head

I also have 300 150g 30-30 Berry bullets and 2000 110g M1 Carbine .308

don't get be started on the amount of 22 ammo I have, Do you want to tell me not to waste the 22 ammo because it's expensive LOL I used to buy 5000 round of 22 for $75 now it's $25 for 550 rounds

I'll shoot you can watch TV or TicTock

14.5 grains of IMR 4227 and a 150 grain Berrys plated bullet has been exceptionally accurate in all my 30/30’s.

With a 150-165 grain bullet velocity Runs about 1450 FPS.

120 year old 1893 with a 60% bore

125 year old Winchester Model 94 with no visible rifling in the bore just a barely visible “spiral”

Remlin Model 336Y

Savage Model 219B single shot with an ancient Weaver K 2.5X Scope.

All these groups were fired with the aforementioned IMR 4227 load.

It even works in the 32/40:

All groups fired at 100 yards.

I loaded up a bunch using Hodgdon data. I called Hodgdon and spoke to a technician, he said I could use their 160gr. Cast LFN data for Barry's or X-treme 150 gr. plated 30-30. If you go to Berry's site or look on the box it should say, you can use any reloading printed data under 2,000fps. with their 150g. 30-30 plated bullets. I have not fired my plated bullet rounds yet got involved in working up a 35 Rem. load testing then sighting in for it. go through your reloading manuals there are plenty of starter loads you can choose from with the Berry's 150gr. 30-30 plated bullet. I'll be happy to read and see your targets.
happy shooting.
PS. if you crimp, crimp lightly.

I’ve moved out of trying to do plinking rounds and such. Instead I’m just VERY intentional when I practice. If I shoot 3 rounds X gun, as I’d shoot from a deer stand, and all 3 hit my target I call it good and put the gun up. Most I’ve ever shot in 1 sitting was a full box of .357 in my SW pre27, very much bragging to say I went 50/50 on the 10” gong at 20 and 25 yards.

I'm a real sucker for cast bullets with pistol/shotgun powder in the 30-30 win. I haven't tried the Berry's or X-Treme plated bullets, yet, but I've shot several thousand different cast/lubed bullets in 150, 165 and 170 grain weights. So far, my favorites have been with Unique, A2400 or AA#7 and most often shot for either 5 or 10 round groups - which most often will be (as a group) sub 2 MOA (considering 50 yards). On a good day, for me, the 165's with AA#7 will stay within that 2 MOA range at around 1700 fps. It may not be deer hunting quality but it dang sure kills them paper targets ;)

I shoot mostly plated bullets in the bottom feeders (9mm and 45 auto), but haven't tried them in anything that I'd usually roll crimp (particularly tube fed). I do need to give them a try in the 30-30 though.

edit to correct .... I said 2 MOA but it should have been 3 MOA. Just trying to be honest ...

4198 has been the best accuracy performer for me. Like others suggested, less than 1,500 fps for the 150 gr option. For Practice, plinking, and introduction to center fire for new shooters the 110 gr is great. My best accuracy with the 110 gr is around 1,700 fps with no issues. For all plated bullets, I suggest you invest in a taper crimp die. Roll crimping is like a wire stripper on the thin copper plate.

Sadly, Trail Boss powder seems to be unavailable. I wonder if it was discontinued?

I've enjoyed shooting mild 30-30's with the 150 Berry's, 8.0 grains of TrailBoss for just under 900 fps. Lots of fun to plink with.

Guy
Sadly yes - Trail Boss is history. I liked using it for powder puff loads in .45-70 but will reserve what I have left for pistol cartridges instead of that cavernous case.

Reciently started loading Berrys 150 for my 1948 Win 94. My max velocity (less than 2000 ft/sec) load is 23.0 gr. IMR 4198. I get 1900 ft/sec and good accuracy (for me) with the open sights. My light load is 10.5 gr Universal. I get 1350 ft/sec witah a little less accuracy. Primers are CCI 200. I crimp with the Lee FCD. I have a lot of CCI 34 primers that I want to try. I also have a lot of AA2015 powder that I want to try to use it up. I load these because I am not good with open sights any more and I still want to shoot my old 94. As always start low and work up as what works in my gun may not work in your gun.
