Today I stopped by a LGS and he had a Savage 99 in 243. Some one had replaced the original butt and fore stock with what I believe is Tiger Striped Maple. Also it was beautifully engraved with a Bear on the butt stock. The butt and fore stock was custom checkered and engraved. The bluing was at least 98 percent and the lever is case colored with a lot of color left. This thing is gorgeous. I just had to take pictures of it to show you guys. I hope they turn out good enough to show the rifle off as it should be. I thought it was priced pretty good $775.00. I don't know if that is a good price or not because of being customized. I almost put it on lay way for myself but didn't. If any one what like this guys business information just ask.

I must be doing something wrong. For some reason when I click on the picture it will not enlarge. If any one could help me I would appreciate it. If you could see the true beauty of the rifle I believe one of ya'll would want it. I'm not trying to sell this gun for the owner just trying to let ya'll know its a beauty and available. I figured how to get the pictures inlarged and clear up but can't get rid of the first 2 pics, there at the bottom of the page .

my favorite cal, in the 99 savage is 300 savage. the 250-3000 ain't bad either but then again the 243 is a great round. i have hunted many moons with one in different guns.

Looks like an early model 99C, being a 99 person I would probably pick it up, would just like to look at the wood work during moments in the woods. Maybe swap the wood over to a 308. Around here a good early 99C goes for about 600. Part of the value of a really good 99 is original wood, I would pay 750 for it, but don't think most 99 people would.

I am not very knowledgeable on the Savage 99, so I can not say what its real model is. It does have a release button for the magazine on the right side. I believe it has a bullet counter just behind the receiver. I never saw the mag. release button on a 99 before. The only flaw of this rifle to me was I felt the stock was kinda short. A liitle longer recoil pad would most likely solve this issue. I have not shouldered many 99 so I can't say its actually to short or not. It is scoped but appears to be some thing like a 1x5. I'd venture to say the stock is under 14 LOP. It was such a nice rifle, I thought some one would be interested. I am in the market for a 243 or 7mm-08 myself. I like pretty wood and this rifle has it, even has what appears to be a rose wood grip cap. If I change my mine and snap it up. I'd name her Rosey.

If it has a magazine release button then most likely will not have the cartridge counter. The numbers in the little window on the side of the action are for the built in rotary spool type magazine. They are harder to unload as the ammo has to be cycled to empty the rifle. I do prefer the rotary mag, nothing to loose.

Looks nice, that`s for sure. Is it a practical weapon to carry ? That`s for others to decide. Does it have collect value after all the changes ? Not like the original, pre-mil 99`s . Plus, it`s in 243 cal. Good round but nothing special in a 99.

Would I trade my 99F, Pre-mil in 250/3000, all original for that ? NOPE!

mrguvana, this rifle was at Gale Force Winds gunshop in Shawboro NC. I like it but not really interest in Savage 99's. Some one spent a lot of time and effort on this little rifle. I could have done without the bear on the butt stock, but all in all the work was very good. I never cared much for tiger stripped Maple until I saw this gun. I have been wanting a 243 again but think I would be better off with a 7mm-08. I talked with my banker about borrowing money to purchase a high end rifle for my Kentucky hunt in November. No problem, but I guess I will just restock my Weatherby 270 instead. I have found a Weatherby long action stock that has the rose wood tip and beautiful wood for under $130.00. This will make me a new gun and is an improvement I have been wanting to do. I might just name her Rosey. My Father and I have twins in synthetic stocks, so I figure I'll restock mine for the fancy look and have Dad's for the hard work. When I do get my tax money in hand, I my get a Browning BLR 7mm-08 White Gold Medallion. We are looking at a bad winter and my extra money comes from my Wife's job. And she drives a dump truck here in Currituck. When it rains she doesn't get a full week. No need to stick my neck out now. Beside I don't really need a new rifle. I have a 30-40 Kraig, 1917 sporterized Enfield, 2 Weatherby 270's, Browning BAR 270, Mossberg 464 30-30 at my disposal.

I have never been a big fan of the 243 Win--but I do like those Savage 99s. They are fantastic rifles--learned how to shoot a centerfire rifle by getting trained on my cousin's Sav 99 in 300 Savage.

The 243Win is a fine caliber for whitetail deer. My dad, who just turned 70,
wore-out a Savage 99 in 243. I wish I could say for sure how many feral hogs
and deer he put down with it....a bunch.
The models with the detachable clip are later production...
The most desireable models are the "D" (deluxe) but they are all very
well made. Only flaw is the trigger. It is not adjustable, but a good gunsmith
can help it.
I would love to re-barrel one of these to a 7-08...They actually were produced
in this caliber for 1 year. Near impossible to find.

My Dad's first year for .243 '56 99F he got for high school graduation he gifted me as an heirloom. He hunted with it every year for 40 years until it lost accuracy. Not sure what caused it, just through it was shot out. I was cleaning it up last year and noticed about 1.5 in from the end of the barrel it had developed a bulge, had a local gunsmith bore scope and inspect the barrel. It was still pretty good for a high use .243 so I had him shorten the barrel. Not a bit of finish left on the exposed metal and zero rust. Only put 10 rounds through it to get on paper at 25 yards as I couldn't get to a proper range but looks promising. Hoping to get some 100-yard time soon.

I talked to my Dad before shortening it, he said it ain't no good for nobody the way it is, go for it.
