450 Bushmaster powder preference

I've handloaded for over 30 different rifle cartridges and over 20 different handgun cartridges. Normally, there is a dedicated favorite powder for a cartridge. I have not yet found that for the 450 BM. I have dies, brass, bullets but no gun yet. Although, I have a dandy AR spotted in the shallows.

H110/W296 seems to be the ticket with Lil' Gun a second in powder choices from my little research. So, before anyone bashes H110/W296 I will have to say I burned up at least two eight pound kegs of it with 30 Carbine, 357 Mag, 41 Mag, 44 Mag, and modern 45 Colt with never an issue. Either my dozen S&W's and other guns are magical, or there is nothing wrong with this powder. I assume the latter. I'm not afraid of this powder despite half the members of every gun forum on the internet.

So, you 450 BM AR guys. What powder would you suggest for the 250 gr FTX?

I use A1680 with the Hornady 245 gr Interlock SP in my 450 BM AR. I haven't taken a deer with that combo yet but hope to this year if everything goes right. I would think H110/W296/Lil' Gun would also work just fine with 450 BM loads.

I did alot of testing and finally landed on Lil' Gun as my most accurate powder. I tried 296, 110, Blue Dot, 2400 but things really got accurate with Lil'Gun and the 250 grain Hornady gummy. I don't remember the exact load, but There is a whole forum dedicated to loading for the 450BM. 450bushmaster.net and pay attention and read all the posts by Hoot and definitely read up on the Legendre Crimp Post. Only way I could get those big bullets to keep from moving in the mag of an AR-15.

Thanks guys. Guess I'm on the right track. Ret_Eng suggested AA1680, which I never considered. My Cabelas has multiple 8 pound kegs of that powder. I do have H110 and Lil' Gun in the powder vault already. So, will try them first along with a pound of AA1680 and by an 8 pounder of what works best.

The AR I have spotted in the shallows is a consignment gun my ffl dealer put together for a customer who lost interest in AR type rifles. It has a scope and base not to my liking and the owner doesn't want to separate. So, I put in an offer today for bare gun and will know by Monday if accepted. Otherwise, Windham weoponry will be ordered.

WW296 or H110 is the preferred powder. Just think of this round as well as the 50 Beowulf as a really big pistol magnum cartridge. The operating pressure is in the 30K to 40K PSI range.

Yes, I understand the correct mags. If I get the Windham it comes with their mag. If I get the consignment gun it comes with a modified 30 round mag my ffl dealer modified to work with a pin to keep the follower. Personally, I just want a flawless working 5 round mag for the BM. What's the best out there?

I like the reasoning behind the .452 pistol bullets in the BM because they will expand well. I do have some Sierra 300 grainers on hand from a modern 45 Long Colt project. Will the 300 grain Sierra's feed ok in the 450 BM?

I'll see how the 450 BM works out before I get too interested in the 458 Socom. Hate adding another cartridge with hard to find components. However, long as we are talking. Who makes .458 bullets that expand well at 458 Socom velocities?

Try your 450 BM first. As far as 458 SOCOM any 300 grn expanding soft point bullet should work okay on hogs. It uses the same bullets as a 45-70 (458 diam). Since you should not shoot lead in an AR you will be limited to jacketed bullets. 458 SOCOM loads are approx 2400 FPS so that is about double what a 44mag will do.
I have been using C-products 450 BM 5 rd mags for my upper and have had no issues. You can modify a 5.56 mag but you will need to change the follower to a single stack one and then do some trimming at the front of the mag (requires testing at the range for reliability).

H110/W296 or Lilgun. I have tried 1680 in several cartridges and I never get close to what the velocity the manual says even using mag primers. For bullets, I like the barnes 275gr. The Hornady 245FN interlock and 250gr ftx leave a lot of bloodshot meat behind. For mags, the C-products Duramag is the best one out there I've tried.

I should add I'd go with a heavier profile if you can if going with an AR15 plarform. I got a few shilen profiled 2nds due to gas journal location (needed an extension, headspaced, and the gas block journal set back a bit) that were a standard profile (.860" under handguard, 3/4" gas block, .735" out to the 5/8"-24 muzzle threads which is actually sort of light since the bore isn't .223. I usually make mine about .920" under the handguard, .875" gas block, .820" out to the 11/16-24 or 3/4"-24 muzzle threads. The added weight makes a noticable difference in recoil if you're going to be shooting it much.
