Hi,
Could you folks please advise how I can fix this issue. The magazine tube band (attaches tube to barrel) is loose in the dovetail so the tube is not secure. It wobbles around. The gun still works but I assume it is suppose to be tight? What would be the best way to secure? Thanks a lot.

Some folks will tell you to peen it, some will suggest Locite, you can also add shim…………..or like I did with my son's, changed the band, the dove tail on the original was a bit worn.

Just for info, I think you are talking about that trunnion(forgotten word of hand?) part sliding back and forth in the dove tail. I know on other caliber rifles I have like that, I can push the magazine tube back and forth in the dovetail slot by my fingers without a large amount of pressure. They aren't sloppy or wobbling around as you say above, but not real tight either. A guy in here that used to work for Marlin mentioned in here in the past that they shouldn't be real tight where it mounts that tube, and the reason was to keep from putting a bind on the barrel and effecting accuracy as you shoot, when barrel heating up, etc. Anyway, I thought I might pass that tidbit along depending on what you plan to do to snug it up... good luck to you.

Great tip. Thank you. Mine so sloppy I could not tell which way the part slides in the dovetail to tighten up. I think I'll try that tinfoil tip. Thanks,
Dave
I'd be one of those that would tell you NOT to try to shim the slot or use ANY sort of goop on the parts. The thing is loose because the lips of the barrel slot have deformed, if you put those back into position, the hanger is going to stay put. I use a very light hammer with a polished face and just tap the edges of the dovetail along both sides of the slot, hammer flat to the barrel. You won't even see how much they've moved. The polished hammer face is so you don't leave hammer tracks. This is done without the hanger in place. Then tap that back into place with a non-marring punch. The question is, how did it get loose in the first place? Have you got one of those magazine tube sling stud clamps on there?

Thanks, I don't know how it got like that. The gun is new to me and I started noticing it about a week ago. When I move the hanger around in the dovetail I can see that some oil has migrated in the dovetail. Maybe that has something to do with it.
How do you remove the magazine tube?
Thanks a lot.

If you notice there is a pin in the band, when you tap it out the mag tube is removable, I believe it's right to left :hmmmm:, as AZ has said it's not supposed to be held vise-like, a bit of movement is good. As I posted early on I would try and replace the band, "may" be worn, at least thats what I did on a Model 81, solved the issue without shimming, peening or doing even a minimal amount of tapping on the barrel dove cut.

You can try Numrich or Brownwells, they also surface on e-bay, a good source of Marlin gun parts.
