I have heard the exact same thing about accuracy concerns that dpe.hoy states here. They do not sell at any of my LGSs--the 200 grains are the ones that everyone wants. I take my 35 Rem to the woods when I might have to deal with a bear and the 200 grain round is the best one for that situation. I figure if I am going to shoot 150 gr rounds--might as well use one of my 30-30s.

 

I tried a box and my 35 didn't like them to much. It loves anything that's 200 grains. Still it was decent hunting accuracy with the 150's.
For me the reason I love my 35 REM is because it shoots the heavier bullet then the 30/30.

 

My 336 grouped those 150's like buckshot:biggrin: At least I kept the empty brass...

I haven't found a 200gr factory load that my 336 didn't like.....

 

Double check. I THINK the 35 Rem/Rem 150 CL is a spire point and not recommended in a tube fed Marlin. 2 rds ok - one in chamber and one in tube. But not a tube full of spire points. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

 

Wow, thanks for that. I wasn't thinking when I bought a few boxes. I couldn't find anything else and wanted to take my new 35 to the range, The round is a pointed soft point (PSP). I will take the one in the rifle and one in the tube advice. I'm just glad I can even use it after this discovery.

My Dad and I used them in the early 90's for deer with our Marlin 336's. As I recall, they shot well but didn't expand very well. I don't remember our magazines blowing up either with the pointed bullets. Now, that I'm more educated, I use only Federal 200 Power Shoks or Sirerra 200 Sp's. The trajectory between the 150 and 200 grainers is nill with the range of the 35, and I cannot see using a semi spitzer type bullet instead of a nice round 200 grain SP.

 

If you handload,and the cost is reasonable they are actually a pretty good deer load. They shoot better in some rifles than others, and the pointed bullet might not be so good in a tube magazine with more than a couple rounds. Recoil is quite a bit less than a 200gr bullet.

I got a box of them with my .35 when I bought it. I haven't tried them yet, but they looked kinda pointy for a tube magazine to me.

 

Years ago, I hunted with an older Remington slide action rifle in 35. It had a unique spiraled magazine that accepted the pointed bullets safely. My brother borrowed it for a weekned and killed a dandy 6 pointer with it. No lethality problems at all with that short 150 grain bullet.

I had one like that years ago, a Remington 141 in 35 Remington.Nice rifles, wish I still had it. The 14 and 141 were predecessors to the 760.

 

Thanx for the input. I'm going back there today as they have a 20%off all used guns sale starting today on both long and handguns. I'll look at the bullet closer to see whether it was a RN or spire point type. I just saw the 35 Rem and 150 gr Core Lokt on the box and my mfeeble mind just started spinning ! they did have a used 35 cal 336 last weekend, it may still be there!

To TMan51 Not much yet. I just bought my first Hi powered rifle a month ag, a 91 336 in the 35 Rem cal with scope for 5 bills. Been hunting for close to 50 years in Va. but all the counties I have hunted in were shotgun only. Just within the last couple years a family plot has become rifle allowed. It's perfect for a leveraction rifle. The other fav LGS usually has a good supply of 200 gr Corelokts and LE's.

 

Those are different than my 308 ME Corelokts! I have used similar 170 grain PSPs in my 336AS 30-30. They were made by PPU (Serbian company) and I had no problems. The PPU 30-30 ammo is loaded hotter than US 30-30 ammo but worked really well in my Marlin. They are quite a bit cheaper than Remington or Winchester offerings but are just as good. I first used PPU ammo in captured Serbian AK-47s just after we entered Kosovo in 1999. Didn't have any problems back then either--this ammo is much better than what the Russians and Chinese make.

I think you should be good. PPU (Prvi Partisan) had the same bullet type and they didn't go off in my tube mag. Remington would not put those out if they were not safe in a lever gun. Especially since 35 Rem rifles are only being produced by Marlin.

I have never had one go off in my magazine tube I picked up several boxes years ago at a store closing sale think I paid $8 a box none of my 336's liked em but my Contender loves em

 

The ones I looked at again today are like the ones Big Poppa has. So they should be ok then the way I understand this conversation? I may pick up a box and give them a try before hunting season starts. The sale was really bringing in business thats for sure. They had 2 336s of interest, a 1980 in 35 Rem in ok shape, used but not abused for 449 less 20% and a 1978 30-30 with a big scope for 400 less 20%. Same basic shape. They also had some Bushmasters (new) AR15 types for 679 which really caught my eye. Didn't buy anything yet. May go back tomorrow at noon! Thanx for the feedback!

 

If you can't find anything else--go with the 150 grainers. But the 35 Rem has a bigger bore than the 30-30 and really calls for that heavier bullet to use its full potential. Like I said before--if all you are going to use is 150 grain loads--I would stick to a 30-30. I have taken quite a few deer with my 336C 35 Rem--all were DRT with the heavier bullet. And it can be used for black bears as well. Just my $.02.

 

I never noticed them before, but then I've never looked for anything lighter either... only used the various 200gr bullets in mine.
Slightly off topic and been years since I've seen any, but I wonder if Rem(anybody?) ever made those sabot type "accelerator" rounds in .35rem? Not that I really care all that much, LOL.

 

i have used them in a contender they worked great also tested them in my rem 760 and they shot ok there to have not tried them in my 336 35 rems but you never know i still have a couple of boxes laying around

 

For what very little you gain...why even chance it...and you really cannot go by anecdotal experience.
I suspect there is good reason why they warn against using pointed bullets in tubular magazines.
To me, it would not be worth the risk.
Avoid the Buffalo Bore 220grain FN bullets though...they are made more for penetration on bigger big game...like moose...not a little thin skinned whitetail deer.

 

I've used them for several years, harvested many a Whitetail Buck. My reason to use them to begin with was to get a little bit of extra range with the round.
I've been looking for a 150 round nose for a while with no luck. Anyone that knows where to find them or even if they exist let me know. Talking factory loads
I'm not set up for reloading. Never had a round go off in tube with these pointed soft points.

 

bought several boxes when it was looking like 35 rem ammo may have gone the way the dinosaurs did a few years ago. did not shoot as well as 200gr but at least there was new brass to be had. They may work well in the 141, model 8 or 81 with the twisted mag tube for SP bullets.

 

I have used these, but only 2 at a time, to be on safe side, no biggie, since I was only target punching. Hunting, use 200grains. Just my 2cents
