Cascade Jinx: Sounds like you might be "local." Hope we cross trails one of these days.
I am kind of local! At least on the same coast - I am down here in Beaver and Duck country while you are up there with those poor Huskies and Cougars! ;D ;D

Would love to cross trails and shake your hand any day Wet Dog!

That's some super fine shooting. Unfortunately, there's no place around here where I can try to shoot that far.

Hey ya’ll -- Wet Dog did another outstanding job, with his shooting, and reporting of the events. I may have a slight edge on the long range stuff, although he is closing the gap rapidly; he is way far and away more advanced with the picture posting. I won’t be looking for a camera man job any time in the near future!! I laugh every time I see it.

I actually believe he had a hit on his third round too. The pipe sometimes has a small gap in the “cleavage” and the bullet slips through with a muted metallic sound as opposed to the nice clear “tonk” we so love to hear.

Thanks for all the kind words. I sure enjoy shooting with him and I hope by the next visit he has alittle more rear sight and we can continue the journey. For all you guys, if you’re in the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to give me a shout.

Best regards. Wind

A real Mathew Quigley. ;D

.

I have been all over "North Central Washington state". Have seen/felt plenty of Wind but it didn't carry a 30-30, The wind had lots of dirt and dust but no guns, maybe a cow or pickup and once a John Deere but no 30-30s. ;D ;D ;D

What town do you and WD hang around?

.

You guys need to see 30wcf shoot at 500 meters.. with his 30-30 and the others at the club..

Hey there JBledsoe -- Wet Dog is from the west (wet) side of the state and I'm a little east of the town of Tonasket here on the north east side. It is nice to have plenty of room and a place to shoot. If you're not doing anything about June 12th, why don't you come shoot some silhouette and dingers with us. You'd be welcome.

Hey Gunjunkie -- I would love to meet John and smack some flat critters with him. You too. My dad was from Pennsylvania and I haven't been back in a very long time. They have a 1000 yard buffalo that needs some shooting and I think we could handle that chore too!! You both would be welcome here too. Charter a bus and bring your friends, there is lots of room.

Swing down through Kentucky and pick up George on the way. We've got to get that boy up to speed on "Kentucky elevation"!! ( I can't believe he's never heard of it!!)

Best regards. Wind

That buffalo looks like the taco bell dog.. at Ridgeway.. LOL.. But the guys did sling some lead that way.. . it's an awesome range..

Wet Dog,
Thank you for the report and video. NEAT! Nice shooting to both you and Wind! ;D Thank you for sharing.
It is a great deal of fun to shoot at long distances with leverguns and cast bullets. ;D

Gunjunkie,
Thank you for the kudos, but I do miss more than I hit sometimes. I figure if I get enough lead in the air, some of those bullets will eventually find steel....... Looking forward to seeing you in Ridgway sometime this year.

Wind,
Neat range, nice shooting! I would love to shoot with you fellows sometime but there's a bit of distance between us (about 2,500 miles).
If you ever get back to PA, a visit to Ridgway would be great! I'll bring the guns and ammo......

Here's a pic of a friend of mine, "John Boy", standing between two 500 meter rams that he managed to hit with a reproduction Henry rifle in .45 Colt....

Only 2500 miles? I think Wind might have enough rear sight to get that... Set em' up and I'll film it. I wonder what the delay would be on the shot until hearing the ring... ;D

Interesting thing about Wind, every time I come to a conclusion he has a way of erasing it. Last fall I would have thought a 300 yard offhand shot at a 12" x 16" target was wasting ammo. I watched him ring it a few times and then let me try. I couldn't quite get it done so he brought out the sticks, after which I nailed it a few times in a row with his Marlin 1893 (made in 1896) in 32-40. That planted the seed that maybe I'm not giving these old calibers their due.

Simple truth is that guys like Wind, 30wcf, Swany and a bunch of others that frequent this forum know better. I got enough trail dust on me to know better yet I still learn something new or broaden my understanding by just listening to these guys. I hope in some small way posting these range reports and videos change some minds and inspire others to give it a go with their "brush guns."

John all of you that I have had the pleasure of meeting up their are way too modest about your abilities.. Between your group and Roy( Reflex) you can do with levers what most people would have a fantasy dream about..

All we ever considered here or in the Army was KY windage. Never heard of KY elevation. Yep we used KY windage on 105 MM main guns as well as rifles but no KY elevation. hehehehe! Always just called it plain ole elevation. I would love to make the trip so you could explain it to me though. ;D

Ain't buyin' it! Can't be done!!! A 30-30 won't shoot further than 150 yards! Won't kill nothin' unless yer standin' on top of it! Ain't good fer nothin' but gut shootin' a deer!

I've heard all of the gun shop "Experts" expound on the 30-30 for 50 years. We've shot 30-30s at 400+ yards on a regular basis. I would never take a shot on game at that distance, unless I absolutely had to, but in a pinch I would try.

Several years ago I was with a friend camped out in the Eastern Oregon desert. He brought a brand new Ruger #1 in .338 Mag. I had a Winchester '94 short rifle in 25-35. We ranged a 4' square boulder at about 400 yards. He settled down and fired 5 shots with open sights, all of which were low. I rested my elbow on the hood of the truck, adjusted for hold-over and dead centered the boulder with the 25-35 on the first shot. I turned to him and said, "You need to get one of these."

The 30-30 has been under rated and disparaged by gun writers to convince the readers that they need to buy the latest plastma blaster on the market. And it's all a crock of BS.

Great videos!!!

I agree with you. ;D 3 or 4 years ago I went over the hill behind my house on opening morning of deer season. Within 15 minutes I had a nice doe down thanks to my 30TK 30-30 with factory irons. Later that day I went to the store down the road where a younger feller I knew asked if I was hunting. I told him not right now. I then asked if he had been. He told me he had hunted all day and didn't see a anything but one doe and missed her.. Then he noticed my well used 30TK on the dash of the truck and said I needed to get me something to hunt with if I expected to kill a deer. I then told him my deer had been hanging since 8:30 that morning thanks to that well used 30-30.

He was packing a fairly new Ruger in 7MM Mag and wearing 500 dollars worth of the latest camo, boots, and what have you. He didn't hit a deer all season and I filled all my tags with that 30-30 while wearing my everyday clothes. I still tell him every time I see him to come over and I will teach him how to kill deer. ;D

That was some good shooting. I wouldn't take a 400 yard shot at a deer with my 1936 but I am inspired. The longest range around here is 300 yards so I'll have to set that as my goal.

Hey there everybody -- All this long range shooting that I do, and I'm very sure Wet Dog feels the same way, is solely about shooting things that go "Clang", "Tonk" and "Ding" at substantial distances. We are definitely NOT advocating hunting and shooting living creatures at these ranges. Best regards. Wind
