Dudes, just got back from another fun weekend that included some long range shooting with my Marlin 336 Cowboy (conversion) over at Wind's place. Wind is one of those guys that ain't afraid to challenge conventional thinking - he sure has opened up my mind to what is possible - last Saturday was another one of those days.

So here's how it played out, after our silhouette match (I'll write a report on that later) and lunch at the local Mexican restaurant, we jet on up to Wind's place. Last month I managed to ring the 400 yard dinger with my 30-30 336 CB and was eager to take another crack at it... In typical Wind style, he suggested we go out to 500 yards, 400 yards was "been there, done that..."

We're shooting at this - 20" wide by 32" tall

I take some shots to figure out where I need to hold to get on. Wind makes an adjustment to his tang sight and touches one off in his Winchester 1894. We have a variable left to right cross wind so his shot kicks up some dust to the right of the target. He levers in another, adjusts his hold and nails it! ;D check out the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiQGPmo3hmM

This reminded me of the scene from Lonesome Dove when Gus plugs a guy who thought he was safely out of range... What I witnessed was a real life "Gus Shot."

So once I figured out the hold we filmed this

Forgive the poor quality but most of that can be attributed to our electronic incompetence. It was basically a "hold my beer and watch this" without the beer...

After a bit more shooting we walked out to survey the "damage."

In the vid I said 1200 fps but it is actually 1400 fps. Please note that my praise for the Ranch Dog Bullet and the Okanogan Shooting sticks is coming from a genuine PAYING customer. I like their products and they perform very well.

A few other notes.
-I developed this load for Silhouette shooting but have since switched to a load using the same Ranch Dog bullet over 2400 (1850 fps) for the Rams and Dingers 200 yards and beyond - unfortunately I left that ammo at home on that day so I had to make due.
-After Wind shot the 500 yard dinger he took on a stump at over 600 yards and was on it in three shots. :D ;D AND it was Offhand of course.
-It was another great day and one that further expanded my appreciation for the 30-30.

The problem with long range shooting is that closer stuff becomes very boring.
I had the same experience about 15 years ago with my friend. He owns a cabin on 20 acres surrounded by State land. He has a range set up that goes out to 700 yards. This was definitely an experience that blew all of those limitations that you hear about out of the water.
I shoot my 94/44 with 300 cast to 450 yards. I shoot my handguns; 44 Special snubby included at the 200 yard targets. And my Centerfire cartridges at all of them.
Even my 35 Whelen sends a ringtone back at 700 yards.
Good experiences.

Pretty cool, great shooting fellas. I like the fact that you are using mild loads like 10 grains of Unique. I am working up the same load in my newly acquired 30as and the grandsons 336. I just received word from Ranchdog the my new mold should ship later on next work yee haw. Now I have that and the Lee 170's to mess with.

Thanks for the feedback pards. I was hoping you'd enjoy it as much as Wind and I do. If there were more places like this there would be a perpetual primer shortage for sure... Even when you bring all you got, it ain't enough.

Wind is one of those guys that is all Aces. Straight up and a good dude, plus 100% enabler when it comes to shootin'. He's generous with his time, wisdom and ammo. He can do dang near anything at a master craftsman level. We live about 6 hours apart but I'm doing my best to wear out my welcome there. It is seriously disney land for shooters at his place.

achildofthesky: the clicking sound I suspect is the autofocus on the camera. It's an old Nikon point and shoot with some very basic video capability. I'm thinking I need to invest in better equipment just to capture some of the fun we're havin' shootin' stuff - no kidding a day at Wind's place keeps me grinning for weeks, hopefully it will inspire others to invest a little time sending lead down range.

Bill M: Awesome! You need to join us some time! After tipping over and dinging some targets I'd enjoy hearing your experiences tipping back a few brews. You are correct, long range is totally addictive.

Cascade Jinx: Sounds like you might be "local." Hope we cross trails one of these days.

Sweetwater: you're officially invited to join the Kirby Creek Outfit aye God.

Amazing shooting. But how can you do that without a knob sticking out of the receiver?! ;)

I am kind of local! At least on the same coast - I am down here in Beaver and Duck country while you are up there with those poor Huskies and Cougars! ;D ;D

Would love to cross trails and shake your hand any day Wet Dog!

Hey ya’ll -- Wet Dog did another outstanding job, with his shooting, and reporting of the events. I may have a slight edge on the long range stuff, although he is closing the gap rapidly; he is way far and away more advanced with the picture posting. I won’t be looking for a camera man job any time in the near future!! I laugh every time I see it.

I actually believe he had a hit on his third round too. The pipe sometimes has a small gap in the “cleavage” and the bullet slips through with a muted metallic sound as opposed to the nice clear “tonk” we so love to hear.

Thanks for all the kind words. I sure enjoy shooting with him and I hope by the next visit he has alittle more rear sight and we can continue the journey. For all you guys, if you’re in the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to give me a shout.

Best regards. Wind
