30-30 ammo for micro groove barrels

Does anyone have any recommendations for ammo (brand, bullet weight or bullet type) that is most accurate in a JM Marlin, micro groove 30-30 rifle?

As the above posts suggest, Remington CL's are very good.

With new or new to me 30-30 rifles, I've always let the rifle decide what it likes. I'll try Winchester, Federal, Remington and Hornady. FOr some reason, none of my rifles have grouped well with Hornady's FTX factory ammo. I've had rifles that group well with a preference to one or more of the three other brands. Some prefer one weight over the other but I let the rifle tell me what it prefers.

As an example, my 30AS shoots Winchester well but prints a tad tighter groups with Federal Blue Box, and the best group with 150gr. Although, the 170gr is very good. Remington CL's weren't available when I tested what it prefers but my Winchester 1894 built in 1898 definitely prefers Remington CL.

Buy a box in both weights of each brand and shoot them, your rifle will let you know.

That said, hand loads can't be beat and Sierra Pro Hunter bullets shoot very well.

Ammo being at $30 a box, and often hard to find, these two factors may put a big crimp in shooting many different factory loads for accuracy. Buy a box or two of what you can find, and shoot it. The average 336 shoots about a 2 inch group at 100 yds with an accurate load. If the box of factory ammo you are able to find groups between 2 to 4 inches, I would call it a day, at least until the prices came down and 30-30 becomes easier to find. Primarily a mid range deer cartridge, a grouping of 4 inches or less is going to work.. Have only ever shot 170 gr loads, favoring Winchester Power Points when it comes to factory loads.

Like Cajun suggested, my old 1973 model 336 really liked 150 gr Core-Lokt ammunition in it's earlier days. I had it shooting MOA (at 100 yards) consistently in any temperature (for East Texas) ... before having it re-blued and "re-assembled". It then went to 2 MOA with the 150's and actually shot the 170's a little better. Not long after that I started re-loading and didn't look back. Jack's suggestion of the Sierra Pro-Hunter 170's (for re-loading) is spot on - that was the #1 jacketed bullet for my gun. But, the last 3 years or so I load nothing but cast lead bullets and shoot nothing but paper.

Just a suggestion, try the Rem Core-Lokt - both 150 gr and 170 gr side by side first ... then branch out, if you feel a real need, to the other more expensive stuff. Before I was reloading I tried quite a few varieties but always seemed to return to the plain old Core-Lokt's

Another one here for seeing what she likes. My 30-30 does not like the FTX 160gr bullets. I get 7 inch groups at 50 yards. 170 gr Federal Blue box shoots 2.5 to 3 inch groups at 100 yards. My handloads using 150gr Corelokt shoots MOA (1 inch) at 100 yards.

I load my own and my .30-30 336 has Ballard rifling so I am of no use to you.

I shoot 4 different Marlin 336 now. They all shot very nice groups for me with the Federal Fusion 150gr factory loads. Before our GREAT AMMO CRISIS... they we plentiful and cheap at 17.99 a box. I reload, but at that price I just bought alot. Glad I did as it got me a Brass stockpile.
Funny that only 2 of the 30-30's I have owned shot the Hornady LE 160s worth a darn. That load is very fickle
I have always had decent accuracy with 170gr RN or FN that I reload in my guns. That is not true of my 150 gr reload attemps. So I stick to the 160 gr LE and 170 gr exclusively.

Shooting the 30-30 is great....but I always grab my trusty 35 rem when I am off for a hunting trip.
