If you saw my other post then you see i found that nice 80's model 336cs that i put in layaway today. After running the bore snake and using the bore light i decided to buy the gun. While i was doing paperwork the young kid was putting it in a soft case to store in the back until i paid it off (prob right before christmas because its gonna be a gift). I quickly asked if they had any oil so i could wipe the gun and remove finger prints and prevent rust (not sure where they store layaway or if its climate controled). He handed me a bottle of 3 in 1 oil and some paper towels. It wasnt my ideal choices but i figured better than nothing. I wiped the whole gun with a light coating and put a little on the bore snake and ran it through the action and barrel and then he put it away in a soft case. I read online about 3 in 1 not being the best for guns and stocks. Anyone see any issue with what i did or should i go back with some better product and have them fetch it out the back so i can apply something different for safe keeping.

(im probably over thinking it becuase im sure they use it on every gun there and probably dont wipe a single gun down after being handled anyway)

I personally havent used it, but i know my Grandpa always used that stuff, and he was picky so i cant see that it wouldnt work. But dont hold me to that....

Congrats to you, did i read this post right that you have to wait until almost Xmas to pickup thid 1894 :questionmark: :hmmmm:

Come to think of it, its gonna be your rifle and your laying out your hard earned cash, if your NOT happy with the 3 N 1, go clean N lube it the way you would as if it were home, what do they care, its not like your asking them to clean it and they are at work for however many hours doin nothing anyhow.... Do what makes you happy/comfy!!!!

Now if it were me, i would go wax it!!!! :tee:
tan i know it would be good to go....

Hey 79,

3 in 1 has linseed oil in it. There are way better products. (Use ATF myself, for cleaning, lube and wipe down)

3 in 1 oil is an old and dated product, and there are way better products available today.

But with that said, it has taken care of generations of firearms and served as an all around lubricant for many products. I would have no worries for the use you describe.

But if it is gonna worry you till Christmas, i would have no reservations about going back soon and giving it a good cleaning and wipe down with CLP or your favorite product.

I'd use Ballistol or Johnson's Paste Wax or such. I don't know much about 3 in 1, though.

Probably better "space-age" oils than 3in1 but not sure how I could determine that. 3in1 has been keeping barber tools working for a long time. I use it on my electric razor and beard trimmer heads and they spin faster than my lever and get washed with hot water. Something I don't do with my guns.

If "dated" stuff is questionable we need to shut down this forum about lever guns. :)

I worked in my dad's general store in a small farming community for years, and we sold 3-in-1 oil to just about everybody. There wasn't anything better available. It oiled motors, tools, guns, fishing reels, everything imaginable. I used 3-in-1 on my gun's for years, inside and out, and never had a problem. I wouldn't hesitate to use it today on any gun I own.

Just a point to add, an old friend of mine at a local gunshop used something else to keep fingerprints from rusting their shop guns. I dont think it is linseed or anything, but a mix of something they had used for years and years. I am going to their shop tomorrow for some items, and if your really interested I can find out what it is. I may even pick up a bottle of it myself due to the fact that I am plinking more these days.

Are you sure you're NOT confusing 3 in 1 with WD-40?......................I see nothing wrong with using 3-1 oil, its a proven (dated) well refined lubricant.............But then, I use Marvel Mystery Oil , which I think may be older (MORE Dated) than 3-1.........

Take a good look at the cost/oz of the new Space age lubes, and tell me they are actually THAT MUCH better, if as good.........I think the only way our military got to using CLP and many other new things is through a lot of congressional lobbying............

Gotta go..................NAPA is having a sale on Marvel Mystery Oil today!

.

I have been using that "dated" Marvel Mystery Oil for years. I use Rig on guns in longer storage, a few that I have had for 50 years, no rust. 3 in 1 oil is good stuff, the solvents in 3 in 1 can damage rubber products like Wind's nail gun gaskets but there are no such gaskets in a Marlin 336. I would not use it on an oil finished stock, however, it will darken the wood with continued use.

If you are going to worry about it for six months, maybe you should try Cosmoline.

There have to be hundreds of oils and concoctions used on firearms and each individual that uses one seems to have a strong opinion on its merits and the weaknesses of all others. Like others have mentioned I used 3N1 for many years with no ill effects on the metal parts. On another forum there was a discussion on the best oil for lubrication and to retard corrosion. There were many in favor of ATF and just as many advocating for Mobile 1 motor oil. I now own a quart of Ezzox, a quart of Mobile 1, some 3N1, one or two others and several varities of bore cleaners including a quart each of Hoppe's regular and copper. Would someone please send me a PM on this subject when a consensus is reached? BTW, 35 Rem is far superior to 30-30 any day.

Marvel Mystery does come as a oil/gas additive but also make a air tool oil thats some pretty decent stuff. Over the years I have used it for many applications including gun care and cleaning. Handles moisture really well, as air tools tend to draw moisture thru the line.
Most auto parts stores carry it, cost around $2.00 for a small bottle. Before I started using Marvel M,Oil we used 3in1 Oil.
I bought some Lucas Gun oil a couple weeks ago at my local parts store and cleaned a couple of guns with it. It's a syn based oil and seems to have helped smoothed the actions better than the other oils. Also seems to atract less dirt. $5.00 a bottle but it seems to take less.
