25N Failure to Extract

Last range trip my 25N misbehaved for the first time ever. The bolt strips off a round from the mag and feeds it fine, round goes off every time, but fails to extract the spent brass from the chamber. I am able to get it to extract if I manhandle the bolt when chambering the round, but if I use a normal amount of force, it will not grab/extract the case rim.

I eyeballed the bolt and chamber but did not see any obstructions or buildup. I cleaned the rifle and there was barely any crud at all because I have a habit of cleaning after each trip.

Here's a couple few snapshots. I'm hoping someone here will see something I am not seeing.

First thing I would try is to remove the extractor band and clean the area of the bolt where the extractors arms lay. There might be buildup preventing them from closing tight to the bolt. Look at the claw side of the extractor. Is the claw edge sharp and not worn down? Extractors will wear out with lots of use. They are not too expensive and are easy to change. Everything wears out eventually.

Last week, I contacted ruger-Marlin about this and got a form letter today saying it's not their problem anymore. So Ruger can letter after E themselves. I will never buy another Ruger or Ruger made Marlin as long as I live.

In the meantime, I think I figured it out based on the above suggestions. I did not remove the extractor-ejector but went over it with a dental pick and a couple fuzzy Oral B toothpicks and snagged a piece of cloth patch, probably left behind during a recent cleaning. It looked to be wedged under the extractor spring arm. The springs on both sides are flat against the bolt now.

Without having to use any additional force, I was able to cycle two mags worth of unfired ammo, and all rounds extracted and ejected, so I think I found the bogger.

Glad you figured it out. Since Ruger didn't manufacture the gun I wouldn't expect them to have any expertise or knowledge about that rifle, much less offer repairs on it. There are many instances of gun maker take over companies that don't offer service or even warranty on the previous owner's firearms. I'm not a lawyer, but I would think there would be liability issues. Remington would probably have given you the same reply. Just my opinion. Anyway I'm glad you got it fixed.
