I just gifted myself a nice old 1894cl 25-20 WCF for Christmas but now I can't find anything to shoot in it. Does anyone out there know of a source for factory 25-20 brass (new or used). I did a thorough internet search and couldn't find anything other than a little bit of very expensive stuff on GunBrokers. If that's the going price I guess I'll just have to live with it but it seams excessive. I know I can form some out of 32-20 but I would sure like to have some of the real stuff. I was going to post this request in the classifieds but it said I had "insufficient privileges" to post there. I guess that makes sense since I have only been a member since 2011.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

25-20 factory brass is difficult to find, and when found, tends to be rather exorbitantly priced.
Factory ammo is high also when you come across it.
$2.50 a round seems to be average these days.
You can make your own from 32-20 brass, but then have the wrong headstamp, and the time and labor involved is not warranted by the result.
Seems more cost effective to buy it even at high prices.
Once you have a decent amount of brass and bullets, you should be set, as the sweet 25 is not hard on cases as a rule.
I have seen more cases ruined by poor reloading practices than I have ever seen worn out.
Congratulations on acquiring the rifle.
I suspect that it will have you addicted in a very short amount of time.
WARNING!!! 25-20's are known to be Habit Forming

Daltond, I am sure your right. it's just hard to believe that as a Firearms business owner with a storefront and 07 FFl, that I am still not legitimate until I have made a certain number of posts. By the way, cool flag.

I guess they just have a protocol to follow, and it is set in the software with no allowance for any individual consideration.
I seem to remember reading that x amount of posts were required prior to listing anything in the Marketplace. But I just looked for where I read that, and cannot find it. Oh well, I am sure that a moderator could give you a specific answer.

You make an excellent point. Now, 32-20 is impossible to find. Before converting 32-20 to 25-20 I thought about fireforming Hornady 218 Bee brass to 25-20. Unfortunately, Hornady discontinued 218 Bee brass and I don't want to waste any of my stash of those. So, I guess I'll just order 1000 cases of 32-20 from Starline if they ever make it again and be set for life for all three cartridges.

That's crazy isn't it. I got lucky and picked up 300 brass, in really good shape, for $350. I also have a bunch of 32/20 that I can form if ever need to so I think I am good for now. I was really getting worried for a while with a, new to me, sweet little gun and no bullets. The butt-stock is a little loose and there is an old crack repair in the forearm so I think I will cut some new wood for her. I have been carving a lot of tiger maple for people lately. I have never seen maple on a Marlin so I think I might try some on this project and see how it turns out. I will post some pics when I get er done. Thanks everyone.

I am in the same boat since I just acquired a Model 27-S in 25-20. I found a person in the area that had 9 32-20 cartridges so I traded for those an pulled the bullets to resize. The first case I lubed up and gently partially sized, removed lubed, partially sized, etc and came out with a split case. The next ones I annealed and then did the sizing and no problems except for one. The ammunition was so old that 4 of the cases were balloon head. On the search for 25-20 ammunition and cases or 32-20 cases. Thanks for listeneing.

All that I am seeing and reading tbese days in regard to the 25-20, makes me glad that I stocked up on factory ammunition , new Winchester brass, and a wide variety of bullets years ago.
I doubt we will ever see the caliber regain the popularity it had 100+ years ago, and that is a shame.
The 25-20 is by far and away one of my favorite cartridges.
I would advise anyone who likes the caliber, to purchase all the ammo and components you see, regardless of expense, as I believe it is only going to become more scarce, and costly in the future.

No need to be depressed.
Just break open your piggy bank and buy. Who knows?, if ammo and components stay as rare as they are now, You will be able to acquire 25-20 Rifles cheap since they will only be usable as Boat Anchors.
Actually know of a Pawnshop in Montana that used Antique Winchesters for rebar when they redid their sidewalk in front of the store back in the 60's. They were
Not Wanted. Oh, for a bag of gold and a time machine.

I know this is thread is a year+ old but I’m fishing around here to get a sense of a fair price to ask. I bought some at an estate sale (a little high but not bad - nearly 300 cases with 80 still loaded) and now my choice is to sell and recoup my dollars or dive deeper and buy a vintage 1894😉

Since my first post I have managed to find a pretty good pile of brass and ammo 25-20 as well as the 32-20. I now have (3) 25-20's. Right now it seems like the 25-20 brass is right around one side or the other of $1 a brass depending on age and condition. I was at a flea market yesterday and scored two boxes of 70's Rem factory loaded 25-20 for $65 a box. Are you loaded rounds factory or reloads?

The loaded are reloads. I knew the fellah who passed away and he was a serious shooter, though mostly a hunter, so I feel like I can trust the info in his lids. The gun was at the sale as well, but it was Win and I’m interested in vintage Marlins. Didn’t have that much cash anyway.

the interesting brass for me was the Peters. I got an intact Peters box with 12 or 13 32-40 pieces if brass too. That was kind of spiffy.

I’ve spent the day gandering at Vintage 1894s and talking with friends who own one (or two). The fork in my decision tree is going to be, buy a gun or sell the brass. I’m leaning towards a new old Marlin.

You can get Winchester ammo right now at Midway right now for $120 a box. My local guy has Remington for $100 a box. It is what it is guys! Buy it if you want to shoot the 25-20. I pay $100 a week to fill up my diesel pick up truck. I'm not happy about that either. So, should I abandoned the truck along with the 25-20? How much 25-20 could be shot on a regular basis to be in such turmoil? I got the answer.... It's cheapness. Seems like the price per components is more important than the actual need for the rifle.

You of all people know how it is. You get a burr under your saddle (this time in the form of some hard-to-find brass) and suddenly an idea you only slightly entertained before grows. For me, I had entertained a 25-36 to add to some other hyphenated turn-of-the-century Marlins.

So just a little adjustment to your analogy. I’m not abandoning the diesel truck, just hadn’t bought one yet😉

Still might take me long enough to find one to change my mind. It will have to be as nice as my 38-55, 32-40 and 32-20. They are not collectors but they are all nice originals with good bores. My advanced glaucoma could convince me to cool my heels but I do have two friends on the lookout who put theirselves in harms way enough think I may be foolish sooner rather than later. In the meantime I’ll content myselve reviving old threads😂
