I removed the competition portion and dumped the scoring app since it never really pulls together any participation.

For 2025, I have only shot two 10 shot, 50 yard groups

January - 10 Shot Group
Six touching each other and four wide.
Center to center is 2.2" inches
6 shots inside .74" inches

April - 10 Shot Group
The first shot was high right, second shot was right center and third shot was low right. Three other shots flip-flopped...but 5 shots touching.
Center to center is 2.81" inches.
5 shots inside .48"inches

To be clear, are you looking for smallest group, closest to the bull, or both?

Need to know what I'm shooting for....

Scope or no scope?
I have 2 rifles that shoot 44-40. They are both very accurate but they don't have scopes. The fact that they have iron sights, that is the limiting factor. I could be much more accurate with a scope.

I'll try to get out and see what I can do.
I say whenever someone posts their resulting target they should say whether or not they have a scope.
Since were talking 44-40 I don't think we should be using scopes. Shooting 44-40 with a scope is cheating.

Nice Shooting! I don't have a .44-40, but i don't have a old Marlin 1894 in .38-40 and 2 uberti '73s in .45 colt. I do shoot them at 50 yds but i never get the type of groups you get. If the weather stays nice today i'm planing on taking the .38-40 out today. Have to resight it in cause i turned the lyman tang sight around. The bolt kept hitting it when it cycled back.

Well, I don't own one.
Y'all have fun. Oh, and deer season isn't quite over here. ;):D

I will try to get out this week. Mine is an 1894 with no scope.

1. HiKayaker, As I mentioned, I plan on cleaning out that bullseye! Looking for the smallest group closest to/in the 1" bullseye. The idea is the perfect 5 shots in the bullseye. Mark a 1 inch reference for scoring if you want to. I can score it with BallisticX.

2. scope is fine, the idea is to prove the cartridge, not the shooters eye sight. The idea here is for the 44-40 to be the winner, not the shooter.

3. Durango Dave, GO READ THE TARGET......6x Malcom scope was used.

Great shots mehavey!!! But I gotta add the flier. The reason being is that there is a great chance that group will open up to 3.5" with 10 rounds, I'll save it for the 100 yard target topic ;-) I have plenty of 100 yard targets.

Here is 40 shots at 100 yards, 30 consecutive shots @ 3.3" inches....no fliers in 40 shots!

For a 100 yard score = 326

I was able to shoot three targets this afternoon after retrieving my deer stand, 5 shots each from 50 yards.

Nothing special, I was having fun shooting while you guys were at work :p

(all target green shot placement numbers are not in actual fired sequence)

Target 1
Score - 338,
1.560" group

I am trying to learn to hold everything in the same place, and with the same pressures...you know...applied to the forearm, shoulder, down. I try to have the rifle sitting on target free rest, then hold aft pressure into my shoulder, and down on the stock. I try to hold steady down pressure on the forearm. I have no idea if I am doing this correctly. Never did learn to shoot consistent.

Target 2
Score - 325,
1.663" group

Image

Target 3
Score - 316,
1.872" group

Image

Targets 1, 2 and 3 overlay (all 15 shots)
Overall score - 361,
2" group

The top part of the ammo box (left-center) is a 20 count table loader for cowboy action shooting. It already had the leather top with snaps I attached it to a deeper block for a range block.
I am in the process of making two more (right-center and far right. The thin block in the background is my pattern for drilling holes. The ammo box and block (far left) is also one I made. It is slightly more shallow...and yet to get any art work.

Here is a 200 yard target from 2021

I hear 4 MOA is acceptable for pistol sized rifle cartridges.
Scope was zeroed in for 300 yards. 44-40
Lt Col. Townsand Whelen said 12" groups at 200 yards was expected for the 44-40 back in 1920. But that was with open sights I suppose.
