1952 Model 39A value thoughts?

Without saying how much is on it now... Not sure if it's a deal, average, or a pass.

I googled and found some old threads - say Circa 2010 that made this one sound steep, but things have changed.

The metal is pristine. The wood is 95% - rather it's 100% except for some gouges right in the pistol grip area we determined pretty much had to be made by a ring. They're completely dark - could be 50+ years old - almost more of a character thing than a flaw. The white spacer at the buttstock is shot, but that's an easy fix. one of the screws holding the front sight on is missing. I assume that's an easy fix as well.

I believe it should be Ballard rifling. Didn't notice if it was D&T. If it was, I might put a vintage optic on there as a fun plinker/collectible - don't need a squirrel gun. I already have a 39A ('64), so I'm not chomping at the bit for my first 39.

Any thoughts on "must buy/meh/pass" price ranges?

I paid $450 for my 1950 39A about 3 or 4 years ago. I saw a 1959 at Cabela's a for $350 and almost broke my hand reaching for the wallet. $500-600 for an excellent condition shooter is what I expect to see these days.

Ah OK. It's marked $500 - sounds about average. I'll sit on it for a while and put the LGS owner on notice I'll grab it at $400. I'm in there several times a week. I've gotten a few things by telling him to let me know when he was sick of looking at it.

Thanks for the input!

I can't imagine it ever dropping to $400. One of the coolest .22 rifles out there and they don't make them anymore, thanks to Remington.

I bought one a few years back for $565 on Gun Broker so I had shipping and FFL charges too. My dad has one from 1952 and it was the gun I learned to shoot with. He's giving it to my older brother so I went looking for my own. I specifically wanted one from 1952 and after almost a year I found one that was probably 95%-98%. Being that nice and from 1952, I was willing to pay more.

If it were any other time, I'd probably drop the $500 and call it a day. My gun and ammo budget is a little stretched, though, for probably obvious reasons. And the not so obvious reason that I tripped over a pristine 336 in the middle of everything else.

The LGS usually doesn't get much wood and blue traffic - lots of handguns and semis. So it might even make it to November before dropping. I've gotten a Teddy Roosevelt Commemorative Winchester 94 that dropped from $700 to $500, and a mint/as new with packing material old style Papoose that dropped from $299 to something like $129.

The year is not significant, and I already have a sweet '64 model, so I'll just hold out. If I don't get it, best wishes to whoever does. But I'll keep my fingers crossed. Well mostly they're already crossed that I'll have more disposable gun budget in a couple months.
