Stopped by my LGS today and saw a old Marlin in the rack. It is a 30-30 made in 1949. Has a lot of bluing worn off, missing butt plate, rear sight elevator and drilled in the bulls eye and the fore arm for sling swivel studs. The bore was a little dirty but looked to not be rusted or pitted that I could see. No holes drilled for scope mounts. The old girl looked to have been a real hunting rifle. Made in my birth year and I thought about getting it but I am trying to sell some and not buy more. It was marked $249.95 and probably being a waffle top not drilled maybe it wasn't a bad buy and would be a good project for the rest of winter. Might have to think a little more about it.

Ok, so I know what a waffle top is, but what is the purpose of the corregations? Purely decorative?

I went to an auction last Saturday that had a ton of Marlins. There was just such a rifle in 32 special that had been messed with and drlled and tapped. I was really interested but the auction price blew by my top bid in a heartbeat and I was willing to pay more than $250 by quite a lot. Get it when the opportunity presents itself. Those opportunities don't occur much. And Cajun can't have it cause he lives far away. On the other hand I live a lot closer and I could have it:biggrin:. We gotta keep these things in PA cause we ain't got much else going for us.

My '51 model must have been a really good deal if that's worth $250 plus tax, shipping, and FFL fees. Then again, it sounds like a fun project.

If the barrel cleans up it's well worth it - either as a shooter or as a parts gun. These were cut/hand lapped rifled barrels and often shoot like laser beams. The vast majority of these have been carried a ton and shot very little.

Honestly as a shooter though - I prefer them to come D&T for a scope... I like scopes and it makes them even cheaper. ;)

Offer $200 cash and see how things go.

If I hadn't just spent more money than I should have on the CZ Grand Finale 22's I would have bought that gun for a winter project. Timing was just not right. I have Marlins here at home for sale and just trying not to add more. I did call this morning and they said a guy came in and bought what Marlins they had on the used rack and the waffle top went to a new home.

Realize this is an old thread however food for thought a drilled and tapped 336A in 35 Rem. w/ rail attached to the (waffled) top just went for about $1,000+ big ones (+ shipping, + tax) on GB if that says anything. AND, the joker (previous owner) drilled MORE holes (5) than what was necessary to hold the rail on (4). :bigfrown.
