I recently bought a Marlin 1895 45/70. I had heard that Marlin had been having some quality control issues.
When I received the firearm I was pleased, very nice wood to metal fit and nice smooth action.
First trip to the range with a box of Hornady ammo I noticed that it was shooting 6" to the right at 100 yards.
When I got home I carefully tapped the rear sight to the left about .025" with a small brass rod and hammer.
I noticed that there was a gap between the bottom of the sight dovetail and the dovetail machined in the barrel about .010".
Is this something I should be concerned about? It took a fairly good tap to move the sight about what I expected.

Hey there Terry -- Welcome to Marlin Owners. I don't know if it's cause for worry, but it would bug me. I see it as either the sight base or the barrel dovetail is off. I would contact Marlin, and include the above picture, and request they replace the sight for starters. If that doesn't eliminate the gap, I'd go with a BCS. http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/cutting-dovetail/50125-shimming-sight-dovetail.html Hope this helps. Best regards. Wind

I contacted Marlin's Canadian warranty repair depot about the poor fit of the sight dovetail. they sent me a new rear sight.
It fit the same as the original very loose in the dovetail.
Last night I cut a piece of .008" brass shim stock to fit the bottom of the dovetail and epoxied and clamped it in place.
Tonight I carefully filed it until it would just start in the dovetail. After a couple tries I was able to get it to where it took
a light tap with a small hammer and a brass punch to get installed. I am very happy with the fit.
You should not have to do this with a new rifle.

Brass punch, and a bigger hammer. Clamp it in a padded vise so all the hammer power goes into the sight base. I use a four ounce ball peen but go bigger if I have to. If it's to tight remove a small amount of metal from the BOTTOM of the sight base with a fine file. Go slow and test fit. Don't have to remove much!!

I also recommend the Skinner sights!!

This is not a Ruger built new rifle. The rifle pictured is a Remington model. You cannot send it back to Ruger as Ruger will not accept repairs on rifles made by JM or Remington. There are only three 1895s currently in production by Ruger and only the GBL has a rear sight dovetail that is used. The TSBL has a receiver mounted Skinner and the SBL is a rail.

The repair you accomplished sounds like a good result and will work well.
