I am new to Forum & love to read & learn about Lever Action rifles & learned a lot from it. Can anyone tell me if they have replaced the straight stock & lever on a 1895 CB 26" 45-70 with a Pistol grip stock & Pistol grip lever? I like the feel of my .22 Model39 & 39 A & my 30-30 Pistol grip rifles. I am wanting to customize & personalize a 1895 CB 45-70 26" barrel. Any advise would be appreciated.I don't see why it wont work-yet I have read & read I don't know how many articles on these rifles in a bunch of forums with out any body ever once talking about the change! Thank You & I am going to watch CNN now because I heard that OBAMA is going to lead a billion man march across lake Michigan & he thinks he can walk on water but he's going to have to "part the water" so his cult followers can follow their new Savior! Hope to hear from yous.-Tim

Tim, I think Drypowder is the feller you need to speak with about the parts swap. Sorry if my reply was confusing to anyone. I was just trying to make sure you knew about the trigger guard plate more than anything.

The TGP you have now will accept a pistol grip stock but you will have an empty place in the contour of the PG. I suppose you could fill in the groove with something but the PG TRGP would be better in my opinion.

Good luck, and Welcome to MO's!

Thanks georgeky, thanks for the reply & to explain a little further about the empty space in the contour of the pistol grip swap! I know now what I need to do to the 1895 CB. Thanks for taking the time to explain this info. to me. Hope to hear from you soon, once I complete the swap!.-Tim.

Re: 1895 CB Straight Stock To PistoL Grip Stock

I also purchased a Marlin 1895 Cowboy in 45-70 with 26" Octogon barrel back in November 08 with same idea, questions and concerns, but just more recently received the Factory pistol grip checkered stock.

I noticed that the Marlin 336-1895 Owner’s Manual, both online and New In the Box, was not so clear on the different shaped parts for the trigger guard plate, showing piece number 70 as part number 501158 for both 1895 cowboy, with straight grip, and 336, with pistol grip. So much for a piece of paper and a part number - but the Exploded parts diagram more clearly shows more meat on back of the pistol grip style TGP, (or lower tang).

My preference was to keep the Straight grip TGP, and then add a Straight DRC Custom Big Loop (more of Medium in size as compared to WWG) and allow the back part of lever to be recessed in or to fill up the slot left in wood stock. This requires even a little bit more wood to be cut away, but then allows more of a grip of the wood stock and less interference from the lever.

Only time will tell if I am making it more likely for some painfully pinched finger parts.
