The 44-40 is a great shooter! You can load with either "Black" (the black powder guys seem to favor "Swiss") or smokeless.

You will be glad you got that beauty.

We need some photo's, but we sure love the 44-40. And the Century Limited is a sweet platform for the wonderful 44-40. From target shooting to hunting the 44-40 is great. But you best reload or have some deep pockets. 44-40 ammunition is spendy and hard to find. I reload and find the 44-40 a whole lot of fun.

 

It would be hard to go wrong with a Century Limited.

 

I love mine---and yes----if you do your part they do shoot as good as they look.

That is really nice Steve. What a perfect rifle, those colors and that wood make for a sweet looking set up.

 

Are the butt plates on the Century Limited blue, brass or case hardened?

I'm pretty sure they're brass. I haven't seen one in person in about 15 years.

 

Sounds like glowing endorsements. I've also seen the Cowboy Limited model in .44-40. Are the only differences cosmetic?

 

Pretty much. The Cowboy is a plainer gun.

Steve- it's warm here. OP, the 44-40 is a true old west caliber.
The CL is a beautiful example of it.

Is the bottom gun in the photo an 1889 in 44-40 ?

I bought mine when it first came out. Marlin didn't go overboard on Commemoratives like Winchester did. It's very nice looking without being gaudy looking. 24 " oct barrel has a great balance to it. I shot mine as soon as I got it and cleaned it up. I've never hunted with it, but it would do nicely. The wood has a LOT of figure to them. If your in the market for a 44-40, go for it.

Went back and looked at the photos Steve put up of that 44-40 Century Limited and Wow I think I need to find one of those. That is a sharp looking 94 Steve. I like the engraving and the case colors.

mine is not a century, just a plain limited run model 1894S in .44-40 with the safety delete kit installed, you can't go wrong with .44-40, you will like it

Brass Butt Plate

 

I have a Cowboy Limited in 44-40. Is this one of Davidson's production? I am kind of interested in tracking down some information of this gun. s/n is02008xxx

 

Oh thanks Steve now there's another gun that I'm lusting after. Gotta have one now after seeing those pics. It will go nice with my 1895 CLTD
