Hey guys, I recently have been looking foe a 30-06 rifle and i came across the win modal 70 Alaskan. The reason I like the rifle is because it has barrel sights.
I really prefer sights over scopes but I would put a scope to. My question is are the new 70s any good? i know its considered a classic rifle but iv also heard the older ones were considered very ok although thats what iv read and iv never shot one. The money is not a problem, i dont wanna buy twelve hundred and somethings worth of problems. someone told me their bolt actions are produced in the U.S.

The new M70 is a very fine rifle and basically a twin of the former M70 Classic (CRF action). Word in the street at that time was that Winchester's plant (Ct.) was experiencing some Q/C issues when they closed their doors in 2006 or 7. FNH bought the rights to the M70 and began, in 2008, to produce the newest version in Columbia S.C. I own several of the older M70s and all are very nice rifles. Although I'd also like to own one of the new ones, I've still not purchased one as yet. However friends of mine, very knowledgeable gun people, have told me that they are very impressed with the new version made now by a very old name in gun production and the maker of many military arms today as well, FNH.

If I was to buy a new '06 in SS/Syn or SS/walnut, or even Bl/Wal the M70 would be my #1 choice.

I have one of the new Model 70's...a 30-06 Ultimate Shadow.

The action on mine is great, the barrel too...the stock sux...but I figured that when I bought it. The plan all along was to change the stock anyway, thats why I bought the least expensive model. my son also bought one at the same time (same rifle...30-06 Ultimate Shadow)...both of them are superbly accurate and very well built.

Now I'm just waiting on my new stock to come in (appx. 4 months), and a Nikon 4-12x40 side focus scope (probably the Buckmasters model)...then I will have what I believe to be the perfect "all purpose" hunting rifle "for me". When its finished, I can start worrying about trying to get a good western hunt or two booked....I don't really care what I hunt (elk, sheep, mule deer, goats...whatever I can get a tag for)...I just wanna HUNT!...in the meantime, I'll break it in on a few whitetails there at home.

The new Model 70's are made by FN in South Carolina...in the same plant where FN builds machine guns for the US military...the nostalgia and heritage of the old Model 70's is great and all, but the new ones are the best ones that have ever been built (CNC machines, tight tolerances, strict quality control) and I'm not the only one with that opinion.
