A movie I would like to see remade is
A Man Called Horse. I really liked the original film. Richard Harris did a wonderful job. But a newly made movie would benefit from today's cinematography, special effects, and high quality digital sound. There was also a sequel, The
Return of A Man Called Horse, that continued the story. Each of those films was a couple of hours long. So, maybe the best of both could be rolled together into one 2-1/2 hour to 3 hour movie.
As for a series I have a completely different idea -- a five part mini-series.
I read all five books of the
Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper. I thought they told a great story. It consists of five books that chronicle the life of Nathaniel (Natty) Bumppo through a critical, early period of America, 1740 to 1804.
The five books and the periods they cover are:
- The Deerslayer (The First War Path) - 1740-1755
- The Last of the Mohicans (A Narrative of 1757) - 1757
- The Pathfinder (The Inland Sea) - 1758-1759
- The Pioneers (The Sources of the Susquehanna; A Descriptive Tale) - 1793
- The Prairie (A Tale) - 1804
Natty is known by different names by different people and in different times and places. He is known as "Deerslayer" in
The Deerslayer, "Hawkeye" and "La Longue Carabine" in
The Last of the Mohicans, "Pathfinder" in
The Pathfinder, "Leatherstocking" in
The Pioneers, and "the trapper" in
The Prairie.
People are only familiar with
The Last of the Mohicans. I find that odd because both
The Pathfinder and
The Deerslayer are better books.
A mix of some of the stories was cobbled into the movie
The Iroquois Trail (1950). A couple of film versions of
Last of The Mohicans have been made. The most famous was the 1992 film that transformed the book from an engaging tale of adventure into a big screen version of a romance novel. There were two Canadian series done drawing from a couple of the books. One of those was
Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans (1957) and the other was
Hawkeye (1994). But all of the film and TV adaptations were very loosely based on the character. Most changed his name. None told the real story. None were complete.
Each of the books is good enough to stand on it's own. What's needed is a five part mini-series that sticks to the original story as told in each of the books.
