I had this all typed out the other day, hit Submit, got a message that the site just went down. :'(
So I'll try again. ;D

I looked at a few guns a guy had for sale, and bought a couple of Ithaca pump 20 ga's. He had some old Marlin 22's, a couple of 92's and a 97 that I couldn't afford. He also has a 336 that has me kinda puzzled. It is a straight stock with the squared lever, in 30-30, but the best I could see it is only marked model 336 with nothing after. I didn't think to measure the bbl but it seemed kinda short to me. I didn't think until after I had left, but if I wasn't messing up something worth even more, I would like to put the straight stock, lever and etc on my 35 cal. Both ser #'s start with 26 so they're pretty close kin. Is this hard to do? Is the 30-30 worth more the way it is? He was asking $300 for it, should I have snatched it, then what? I don't know if this is something like a Texan or some such, and don't want to "butcher" it if it is. Can y'all help a dummy? ;D
Thanks

Sounds like a 1970s or early 80s Texan. They were never marked Texan, but any 336 with a straight stock is either a Texan, TS, Marauder or LTS. The Texans made in the 1970s all had 20" tubes. Some made in the 1980s has 18.5" tubes. Sounds like you may have run across one of the latter. If it was in good shape then $300 was a good price. They are getting pretty scarce. As for switching out the stocks with your 35, it would involve a good bit of works since the 35 has a pistol grip and curved lever.

For 300 I would have picked it up just to keep as is....as was said in an earlier thread, the straight stock versions in good shape are getting harder to nail down and that one sounds like any true Marlin nut would be proud to give it a home. My personal 30-30 straight grip has the rounded end lever and was made in 1960...the year I appeared ...I would go get that thing and shoot it and enjoy the heck out of it...then looking for a 35 cal sister will just be future fun

There was another straight stocked Texan The Model 30TK made for K-Mart. Same as the 336 except it has the 18.5 inch barrel, and 2/3 length tube. Also came with Birch instead of Walnut wood. I bought one new in 89 for 175.00. Still have it. One of my favorites. Real truck gun. 300 bucks for a 336 Texan is a good price. One on GB now for 425.00. If ot were mine I would leave it be as well. They are bit rare.

georgeky, so your saying this is a texan model? It's a 30TK that I just refinished. Mr fixit

Mr Fixit, Marlin told me it is a Texan made for K-Mart. I bought mine a K-mart, but have lost the manuals, so I don't remember if it made any reference to it actually being a Texan or not. It makes sense to me though as the T in TK very well could mean Texan. Any other I have seen with a T were Texans. Yours looks very nice. I love mine. I put Walnut wood on it though. Was carrying it on a horse just teathered across the saddle horn with a strap. I got off to rest my butt, and the old horse shook right hard, and cracked the birch stock that came on it new. I will post a pic as soon as I figure out how. I use photobucket, and am having trouble getting pix loaded to it.

Marlin 22, that is a fine looking carbine you have there.

That is mr Fixits rifle, but is a nice one. It just came up on my post when I hit that quote button. The TK is my favorite truck, tractor, horse, and hunting rifle. I have carried mine almost daily for 19 years. Killed two deer with one shot a few years back at 65 yards, and Rem 170 grain Core-Lokts. Through and through on both. The closer one fell in it's tracks, and the other ran about 50 yards, and died. I couldn't get rid of it just because of that. Worse thing it ended my season 5 days early. One sold just a few weeks ago on GB. Had been rebored to 38-55. It amazed me for an altered cheap rifle. Brought 680 bucks. Paid 175 for mine new, and it is unaltered.

mr fixit, I read the entire original thread over, and seen where some suggest the 30TK is a WalMart gun with beech furniture. It is not a WalMart gun, they were made exclusively for K-Mart. The K in TK stands for K-Mart. I bought mine new from K-Mart in 89. Paid 175.00 for it, so you got a real bargain on yours. I am also almost 100% sure that the wood is birch, and not beech. I have a photo copied manual somewhere that Marlin sent me for mine. As soon as I find it I will let you know for sure about the wood, but I think it is birch. Marlin no longer has original manuals for theese, but they will print you a copy of one and send you at no charge too I think. I will look for mine.

One more thing. The camo sling came with it new.

I read that myself that it was a K-mart rifle, I'm not too familar with what the grain in beech would look like or it's hardness. I'd have to go back and read the thread, but someone alluded to it being soft, I can tell you it's not soft enough to indent with your fingernail and I have done that in some woods. It's nice to know the camo sling came stock with it also, NOW I really feel like a thief!! ;D ;D Mr fixit

Most all models have been made in straight stock models at one time or another. In 30-30, 35, 444, 45-70, 357, 44, 45, 32 special, 38-55. 39, 97, 81, 93,94 and so on. The more modern will be the 336T, 30TK, 444P, 1894, 1895GG and the various cowboy models. There is a 336 CB in 30-30 on gunbroker right now. BIN of 950.00. There is also a 336 Texan 30-30 at 425.00.
