Seriously Considering Sellin/My Marlin Lever Guns

While perusing GB I came across a listing for a 1975 Model 336 in 30/30; nothing special, just a common as dirt Marlin 30-30. The Current Bid is $4,225.00; the gun has lots of condition, but $4,225 worth? If this is a trend, I've got to wonder what my stuff would sell for? If anything close to that number I'd be sorely tempted.

Yes, sell one if it brings $5000. I've seen the listing. It had 109 bids this morning. It's just a 336 in really good condition before they put safeties on them. It has a scope. Big whoop.

I’ve sold all but my 35rems. Who knows what the market will bring and I didn’t ever shoot them anymore as they were replaced with Henry’s for hunting and shooting. Once the market settles I’ll be buying a new side by side with the revenue from my marlins and have over 10k left over, not a bad return on investment for a couple dozen 2-500$ guns.

Mine is a 1982 444. The last year before that stupid rebar safety was added. It's in great condition and it's not for sale. It was difficult to find and I want to keep it. I more recently purchased a CVA Hunter single shot in 444 to keep it company and to shoot reloaded hornady brass. My Marlin 444 is mygo to hunting rifle. My CVA 444 is for plinking, load development and general recreation.
The CVA is a scope only proposition.
The Marlin accommodates a tang sight very well.
In the process of building a 336y in 30-30. It was a work in progress when I acquired it.
Short magazine, recently added receiver sight and safety bypass plug. Lighter loading gate spring coming soon and I have no idea where it will go from there. Bipod? M-lock? Red dot? Bayonet lug? Who knows?

With gas prices this high, who has money for an over-priced gun?

The Marlin prices remind me of the Savage 99 prices when Savage quit making them in 1999. The prices went sky high crazy. You couldn't touch a 250-3000 for less than $2500. Then the collectors who got what they wanted stopped buying the prices leveled. Then the prices started softening. I recently saw a nice 250-3000 for $800 at a gun show. 300 savages are $5 to 600 now.
I have no idea what the prices will be on Marlins but I expect the same thing to happen. I expect the market to soften more when it does as there were thousands more Marlins made than Sav. 99's. Now is the time to sell, BUT we are having inflation right now too. I've seen that in the late 70's early 80's. Prices will never soften.
To make things more interesting Ruger is making Marlins again and that will cause the market to soften even more.

Somebody is going to take a bath on that one. It is in good condition, but there is ding in the stock and several places where the bluing has been scratched / worn through.

Time to sell for sure if you are not using them which for me is about 90 to 95% of my "collection". I am definitely going to need to evaluate, though I believe when the time comes to pay on that one I'd be surprised if they follow through.

I was at a fairly large firearms auction today (300ish total) which had a few marlins on it. They didn't have active online bidding but did take phone in bids (tell them what the max bid was and they'd bid up to that amount for a buyer). I would put the Marlins at a good or better condition.

1971 336 30-30 sold $700
1983 336 30-30 w/safety sold $675
2009 JM stamped 45/70 cowboy sold $1275 (listing said LNIB but I don't think is was quite that high of condition)
Glenfield 75 sold $175
Model 60SSK sold $300
Model 55 (Original Goose) sold $270

The highest was a Marlin production Savage 1895, 303 savage JM stamped octagon barrel, w/round counter and factory letter, Sold $1700

I'd say these were fairly consistent prices for what I've seen sell at these types of sales over the last few months for the 30-30s. The prices are somewhat higher at a couple of shows I've been to recently but I can't say if the few I've seen at the shows have actually sold either.

I finally got to handle one of the Ruger/Marlin 45/70 guide guns the other day at the LGS that I frequent, which they had priced at $1395.

There's something really strange about that GB listing.

That is a nice gun but nothing special. I wonder why the craze over it. There are a lot of other JM 336s for sale that are getting little to no interest. And the seller's description is not quite accurate. He says the metal has no handling marks and the stock has even less. This one doesn't smell right.

It could be a couple scammers playing off each other in order to get the bid price up. I never dealt with GB but I suppose I should look into it. I have some classic vintage rifles that have to be worth something and selling them through regional For-Sale websites bring the typical cry baby that complain about the Asking Price. :cautious:

I took a double take when I ran across that one on GB a few hrs ago ... I looked at my ol 35rem 70s era sitting in my cabinet behind that glass and reassured her she wasn't going anywhere but the thought briefly crossed my mind too, kinda like when I heard cz was no longer making the 550 model , I have 2 of the safari classics 1 in 375hh and 1 in 416 rigby and I tell ya those have gone through the roof but I know this poor boy could never replace them if I sold so I'll find another way to pay the mortgage lol

It's had a few more bidders and doesn't end for 20 hours. $4675, I knew there were nuts out there but that is plum ridiculous! I would consider selling my 336XLR in 35R for that. The XLR that I was watching went for the buy it now at $2450.

It has a pretty cool scope on it. Never heard of or seen one before. Thats just a strange auction that doesnt smell right or theres more to the story thats not being told. Its a real nice Marlin but not worthy of that price. I am amazed at how much disposable income there seems to be in this country right now. Houses going for 2X there value usually bought sight unseen the day they are listed. Automobiles selling for the price of a small two bedroom ranch. Crazy.

That's what I was wondering. It's made in Belarus. Is that some fancy, high falootin' scope people just gotta have and the rifle is just icing on the cake? I've never heard of that scope brand either. I do think that NR bidder is the owner though, and maybe a fraud.

I just won Gunbroker auction for a 336 in 35 rem. I was shocked that I won as I placed the bid about 5 days ago
And felt I would be passed over. $607 was my winning bid.
This is a presafety model, has some dings and scratches in stock but thats OK by me.
There is such a thing as NON PAYING BIDDERS on GB. that 4000+ dollar bid may turn out to be such a person.

That’s a great price in today’s market. I picked one up over the summer. Built in 74 for 650 that I thought was good. Congratulations on your new rifle.

In the end, the seller won't have to pay the fees if it turns out to be a non paying bidder. The one with no feedback is probably a shill or has a beef with the seller. The one that has feedback is mostly just an ammo buyer. Both probably know each other. The seller has been around a long time with plenty of A+ feedback so one would think he's legit and has two people with a grudge trying to screw him over. That being said, as a seller he has options to put a stop to it all, if he wanted too.....
