Finally, I found a Sako Vixen and in my favorite Vixen cartridge. Seen a mint Vixen 20 some years ago in 222 Rem. I was younger and had far less money back then. I thought it was the most elegant bolt gun ever made. Went back to the gun store a couple days later and it was gone. Been searching for a nice Vixen ever since in 222 Rem.

I just picked this up today from an online auction I won a couple weeks ago. Glad it's in the 222 Rem Mag. Might still get one later in 222 Rem if I find one in nice shape. This one dates 1964.

Isn't it something to see 222 Rem ammo on the shelf now but nothing else that we really need? I've seen the same thing here in WI. The last two generations have probably never heard of the 222 Rem. Fortunately, I have a lifetime supply of 222 Rem, and the 222 Rem Mag brass. Nosler made a run of brass and ammo five years ago for the 222 RM and I bought 450 cases at a sane cost. Midway has some now for $240 per hundred LOL!

Showing our age. I remember reading in AMERICAN RIFLEMAN the commercial release of the .222 Rem Mag. Junior NRA members got the magazine subscription too, just like regular members.
In a pinch you can neck up and fireform .204 Ruger cases into .222 Rem Mag.

Yes, I am not as old as you, but I understand the showing your age thing. Always wanted a 222 Rem mag. Like you, I figured I could always use 204 Ruger brass in a pinch. I just don't like necking up in a conversion because the shoulder creates a thick neck and or doughnut. However, I think 204 to .224 would work without issues. Just glad Nosler for whatever reason made a run of brass five years ago.

On a side note, I shot a one hole group at 100 yards with the above pictured heavy barrel Sako 469 with the Lyman 6x that came on the rifle. Not the greatest optics by today's standards, but good enough to get the job done. The Lyman scope was put back on with Redfield mounts and Leupold rings. I ended up with better scope alignment than with the original Sako rings. Now, I can use those for the Vixen!
