Hi All, New to the forum. I am interested in purchasing the new Ruger Marlin 1895 SBL 45-70. I am a very tall guy at 6'9" so my corresponding length of pull is 15". The 1895 has a LOP of 13.38" listed on the website. Inquiring as to best way to increase the LOP while maintaining the integrity, beauty and functionality of the rifle? Spacers, thicker butt pad, good gunsmith, etc? Hoping to learn from forum members who might have addressed this. Cheers, Rhody

Welcome, M1Riflenut hit it on the head, a slip on butt pad would be my first choice. If that doesn’t work out you can try the gunsmith option. We are at the opposite end of the spectrum, I’m looking for shorter LOP, but I am 13” shorter than you and shrinking. Good luck.

Welcome to Marlin Owners.

Here I thought my LOP at 14.25" was long. Just remember recoil is measured as perceived so keep that in mind with claimed recoil reduction.

That said, I run a Limbsaver slip on pad on my Marlin Express rifles and I get close to my LOP of 14.25". It works very well. Might consider one.

Thanks Jack. I like the idea of the slip since I have shorter family members who will want to use it so this would be a great option to slip off and on.

My two hunting partners, father and son, were as tall as you and they had the 'smith put on spacers and recoil pads on all their guns. The father especially liked the thick recoil pad and wouldn't admit to being recoil sensitive. "Would you sight in my .338 again this year?" he'd ask. Ouch.

He also had a flinch sometimes.

The Limbsaver might work if one inch more is long enough. A thicker screw-on butt plate inside might give even more length without a permanent stock modification.

My long-armed grand son-in-law might find these comments useful, too.

The slip on recoil pads, especially the LimbSaver, work very well.

Just remember that "slip on" is vernacular. A fairly thick band of elastic rubber needs to be stretched over the butt to put it on. It is doable and worthwhile, but it's more than just the work of a moment. Last one I "slipped on" was more like a challenge. I got it eventually.

I say this since if you have others waiting to shoot that rifle, they need to be patient. Or else let them do it.

I would go with a lace on butt pad that has cartridge loops maybe. I do not have a link off hand but there are a number of leather workers on the wuh.wuh.wuh if you google that can make very nice items.

I would not modify the rifle aside from either a lace on cartridge holder with pad or a custom extension. At least not until you decide you are married to the rifle forever.

Butt pad, they come in various thicknesses. I am normal build so don't need extra length, but did change pads on: 1895, 1895gg, and a couple of 1894c's. The 1994c was for my sister -- definately not needed for recoil but needed for shortening lop. Adjusted my 1894c so she would shoot it when she comes to my area. She does quite well with it and hers, when she brings it. Your rifle needs to fit you.
