Not Marlin related, but I thought this was interesting:

RUGER MODEL NINETY SIX 96 NIB : Lever Action Rifles at GunBroker.com

I bought one of these a year ago NIB at local gun shop for 359.00, he's asking 750.00. I know they've been discontinued and I'd like to think they're worth that, but I doubt it.

By the way it is a great little gun in .22 magnum!

I've had one a few years. Shoots fairly good but not like a 39. Sent the trigger housing to TT Shooter for a trigger job. Now it's trigger is good. Money well spent. Thought about selling it but not at his price. His price is crazy. Don't think it will sell for that price. If it does I might list mine. Might be two suckers out there.

Not to me. But then spending $4,000 for season tickets to watch football about 10 times isn't worth it either.
If you like shooting the gun you will only cry once. I wish i had a 44 mag Deerfield carbine. I wish they made 30 round mags for it to.
Good luck.

I don't think I'd spend much on that rifle. To me, one of the biggest draws of a lever action is the exposed hammer. If I can't decock the gun anyway, then why not just have a semi-auto or a bolt action? A bolt is going to be a little more accurate, and only cycle slightly slower. A semi-auto is going to cycle a lot faster, and be only slightly less accurate. A lever action without a hammer seems like a compromise that no one asked for imo.

There's a Ruger mdl 96 in .22 mag at one of the local pawns right now - asking price $350.

Well that's just rude and ignorant, considering I just said I'd bought one. FYI the Ruger 96 is a very well made and well regarded gun. Ruger has a great reputation for this gun in both 22WMR and 44. Thanks so much for the constructive feedback........

I'm surprised at the negative feedback here (no hammer, etc). Sorry to see that apparently if something other than a Marlin is discussed it will be dismissed as an inferior gun. I own lots of guns and love my two Marlins, I guess I made the mistake of thinking I could mention something other than a Marlin here without drawing negative comments.

This seemed like a nice board but I guess I'll stop posting here if that's the attitude.

OK cboy I'll stick around a while. Just kind of frustrating to see those negative comments to what I thought was a friendly post even if it wasn't about a Marlin. I bought my first Marlin 30 years ago and my second 3 months ago. Will hang out here a while, it was just a little disappointing to see those comments about my Ruger which seemed both uncalled for and un-informed (it may look different, but the Ruger 96 is a GOOD, QUALITY gun) And after all it is a lever action! :)

I see where there were 5 other bidders on this rifle too so maybe y'all know something we don't, anyway I own 2 older(60's) 10/22's and love them but have no experience with the model you purchased but I'm not fond of putting big dollars into "any" .22 rifles, Marlins included. Don't get up-set, if your happy thats the only thing that matters. I really do like a freezer full of beef, thats what matters to me. LOL

Bouhunter, I have nothing against Ruger guns but I do not care for the 10 22 rifles. The only Ruger I own is my GP100 revolver and I love it.I did not intend to dog your Ruger lever gun.I just like the western look of the traditional looking lever guns like Marlin,Winchester,Browning,Henry,Etc.
If the Ruger 10 22 lever gun is your bag then more power to you.

I have a 1022 that is sweet. When my gun smith friend found out I had bought one he said I better figure on him doing a trigger job on it, then he shot it and said he wouldn't touch that trigger. My son has one that is just as good, both right out of the box.

I bought one of these mod 96 in 22 mag last year and absolutely love it, mine is very accurate, fun to shoot, reliable and extremely well made. I thought i paid too much at 400 but i guess not if there bidding that high lol. so far this year i have taken the heads off of five grouse with it. I like how short a throw there is on the lever, it makes it really comfortable to keep the gun to your shoulder your sights on the target and lead flying. I would by one in 44 mag if i found one.

I bought my 96 in 44MAG back in 1998. It shoots all heavy weights exceptionally well. My favorite hunting bullet is 270 grain by Speer. It shoots slower 44 Special ammo very well, too!

I clobbered this dandy buck on a South Dakota hunt while still hunting a river bottom. Distance was approx 75 yards or so. My friends told me I needed a magnum rifle to hunt out west. I guess they were right. ;)
