I am a Marlin guy but maybe you can help with dating a 522 Speedmaster I just bought..

I am getting a headache trying to decipher the date of my 552..Nothing makes sense in my search for the famous websites that are "supposed" to work..It must be a big secret which letters you use for month and year. And in what order. Mine has a three letter code..Which ones designate what in what order? Very confusing..Mine is clearly marked as shown. RFP Do not care so much what letter tells the month..But what %%%% one designates the year? It is in pretty nice shape for a older Rifle..

I was told the guys Uncle bought the Rifle new..Story only..Who knows..Does not appear to have fired much..Or very well taken care of..

Scope is a JC Higgins 4X..

Receiver is obviously pre 1968 as it has no serial number..Front sight is just a narrow bead..Not a ramp.. Barrel is 23 Inches..Barrel markings are:

Remington Arms Co Inc Ilion N.Y.
Made in USA-Patent No. 2.675,.638
Others Pending Remington 22 S L & LR

Thanks for any input you can provide..I appreciate it..

Looks like R E P or is it R F P ?

R is the month of manufacture from B L A C K P O W D E R X numbered starting with 1 for B and X for 12. R would be 11, or November.

B – JanL – FebA – MarC – AprK – MayP – Jun
O – JulW – AugD – SepE – OctR – NovX – Dec

M – 1921N – 1922P – 1923R – 1924S – 1925
T – 1926U – 1927W – 1928X – 1929Y – 1930
Z – 1931A – 1932B – 1933C – 1934D – 1935
E – 1936F – 1937G – 1938H – 1939J – 1940

L – 1991M – 1992N – 1993O – 1994P – 1995
Q – 1996R – 1997S – 1998T – 1999 (*)U – 2000 (*)
V – 2001 (*)W – 2002X – 2003Y – 2004Z – 2005
A – 2006B – 2007C – 2008D – 2009E – 2010
F – 2011G – 2012

Here's where it gets a little tricky. According to the chart above, F could be either 1937, 1959, or 1985.

Can you date your rifle to within 25 years from what you know of it?
The 552 was introduced in 1957, so it has to be younger than that. I has to be older than 1968 since it has no serial number.

It was made in 1958 or 1959 depending upon whether the second letter is an "E" or an "F".

The final "P" is probably a stamp designating the person who assembled the rifle. It does not relate to the date of manufacture.

I have no idea why Remington decided to do it this way, but they did. And now they're not around any more to ask.

Hope this helps.

I have my pawpaws 552, it looks well worn from being kept in his old Willy’s Jeep but like you said... it’s still scary accurate.
They are fine rifles.
