The Long Ranger I ordered a few weeks ago came in. I just picked it up this afternoon. It's in .223 / 5.56 with sights. The folding rear sight is drift adjustable for windage and has a sliding notch with a white triangle beneath for elevation that is screw locking. Front sight they say is an ivory bead. Ivory colored I'm thinking. The wood on this rifle is really nice. It came with a hammer extension and Weaver type scope bases made by Skinner. I've got Warne Maxima rings ordered and a Weaver Kaspa 3 - 9 scope on the shelf.

If it stops snowing around here I'll probably go to the range tomorrow and shoot it with the open sights. I'm not sure what to think about the trigger. It's very smooth and breaks cleanly with no take up or grittiness. I like it. My somewhat educated finger says about a four pound pull, but my RCBS mechanical trigger gage says six pounds!

I really like the sliding transfer bar on the hammer. The bar doesn't go up unless the trigger is pulled back. Safe to carry with the hammer down with a round in the chamber and no stupid cross block safety!

Can't wait to ring this thing out. I'll post some pictures later.

A recent issue of The American Rifleman (February?) featured the Long Ranger. I must say that after I understood the modern, rack & pinion design and the sub moa groups it was shooting, I was very impressed. I've got way too many lever rifles and guns in general so I'm not in the market for one. But, if they chambered it in 260 Remington...................................... Lord help me!

I think you will love it, but we need some better weather. The trigger is the same on mine, a little on the heavy side. Henry is one of the few that still believes in making really nice guns. The only problem I have had so far is henry makes a larger lever for every gun but the long ranger. I am waiting to see if they will sell me standard lever that I will make into a large lever. My 1st henry but not my last.

Very nice! The wood on these is pretty incredible for off the shelf production guns. If I like this rifle as much as I think I will there's probably a Big Boy Steel in 327 Federal Mag and one of the single shots in 45-70 in my future.

Congrats, and a nice looking rifle there! Since I like the BLR we have, and these sort of a clone of them, they have had my interest... just wish it was offered in other calibers too; and waiting to see if that eventually happens down the road a bit.. ;D
Enjoy...

Congrats on a nice new rifle.
I'm a Savage 99 fan but wouldn't turn down a
good deal on one of these.
I have a Weaver Kaspa on my 338MX and it works fine.
Hope you enjoy the new rig.

Took the Henry 223 to the range and shot with the open sights. Considering I'm over 65, wear progressive bifocal glasses and was shooting at 100 yards I'm pretty pleased. I shot some cheap factory PMC rounds at a Birchwood Casey Shoot*N*C target. Ten shots had two in the bullseye, one in the 9 ring, 2 in the 8 ring 3 in the 7 ring, and two just outside the 7 ring. I shot the other 10 rounds at clay pigeons on the berm to see where it was shooting before I tried the target. Shot a few at the 200 yard gong and think I hit it once. Little 55 grain 223 rounds don't move it much. I brought some handloads that I shoot in my AR, but they wouldn't chamber. The lever stopped about a quarter inch short. Haven't looked into it yet. Don't know if the shoulder needs to be bumped back some or if the brass' overall length it too long.

When I got home the rings I ordered had arrived so I mounted the Kaspa. Looks pretty good. I didn't install the hammer extension. Don't think I'll need it. Seems to be plenty of room to safely lower the hammer. I'm looking forward to seeing what this rifle will really do.

I would have bought a henry long ranger but bought another browning blr instead.
The reasons were 2 fold - the blr was a takedown and stainless steel.
The long ranger doesn't come with these options.
I hunt and camp in some really wet snowy, rainy, muckholes and have had to work hard to keep any 'blue' finish guns from pitting.
The only beef I have with the totally reliable and accurate blr is the trigger.

Got to the range Sunday. Beautiful conditions; sunny, mid 50's, and no wind. Took three handloads for the Henry 223, all using Tac and different bullets. I was very happy that I was on paper at 100 yards with all loads. The first few groups weren't all that encouraging, but got better the more I shot. Some of that was me getting used to the gun, and I believe some was the gun breaking in. I ran a bore snake through after every twenty shots or so. One odd thing I noticed was most of the time there was just a little bit of take up on the trigger before it broke, and once in a while there was none. I noticed that the shots with take up grouped nicely, and a shot without the take up would show up as a flyer. Here's the last target I shot. I had seven round left using Sierra 50 gr Boat tail Hollow points. The five shots at the top of the 10 ring all had trigger take up, the two at the bottom did not.
All in all I'm very happy as a first time out. Hoping a few hundred more rounds will help sort the trigger out.
