New 1894 - loose front sight

Hey guys. I'm brand new to the forum, so please bear with me.
I got my new 1894 in January 2016. I have had to send it off for warranty for a stuck bolt. I lost my front sight hood and had to order a replacement, and just installed it. My problem now is the front sight itself is loose. So how can I fix this?
Thanks

My new (in 2015}, 1894 .44 MAG, came with the front sight that was not perpendicular to the barrel. XS Sight Systems fix was all I needed. They actually make a front sight ramp that has oval shaped holes so you can bush the ramp a little right or left to set it straight to the barrel. I was able to true the blade exactly perpendicular to the barrel, tightened the screws down with a drop of Locktite - all good.

Now, if I could only cycle the bloody thing more effortlessly. A couple of months after I bought it, I had to replace the extractor because it broke!

Depends on what you want to do. If you want a scope with a backup peep I would suggest using Ranger Point Precision and his scope rail and front sight. If you want a receiver peep I would use a Skinner front sight. If using factory rear sight. I would use either a Skinner front sight or a fiber optic front sight (but only with a hood on, they can be broken easily).

Thank you for your reply. I looked at the Ranger site and skinner.

After doing more research, my "loose front sight" problem is actually the "front sight insert" that is easily slides from side to side. Is this common on 1894's? Is it fixable or should I replace it?

I doubt the sight itself is the problem, more likely the dovetail in the ramp. Easy fix, all you need is a hammer and a piece of steel as wide as the ramp. Support the barrel on a solid surface and with the sight removed VERY LIGHTLY strike the steel on one of the edges of the dovetail. Try the sight, repeat on the other side if the sight is loose, repeat as needed. Now keep in mind that the ramp is held on by some little screws so you will need to support the ramp when the dovetail slot is tight on your sight. I have done this on my muzzle loader barrels when I get too carried away filing sight slots.
A good assistant will be an asset. Brownell's and others sell a pusher tool just for removing/replacing sights on ramps.

I have had a rifle or two with a loose front sight insert. Either the insert is undersized, or the dovetail is oversized. I would try with a new insert to see if that does the trick. There are a few nice aftermarket sights available as well.

I was about to post this question, but found this thread. My front sight freely slides back and forth in the dovetail. I have no idea how long it’s been like this, but I’m sure it’s why I have so much trouble hitting a 10" steel plate at 50 yards. It can move just by cycling the action. I’m not sure I understand the answers to this thread, but I haven’t a clue as to how to get the front sight hood off. Maybe it would become a little clearer to me if I could just get the hood off. How does one get the front sight hood off?

Thank you for that info. It is in there so tight and I didn’t want to break it. It would move back and forth about 1/32" but that was it. I didn’t want to force it since I had no clue as to how it was supposed to come off. A pair of gloves, and it comes off. No easy task. It is tight. No way to loose this hood unless someone took it off and tossed it.

i may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but stubborn, I am. My only trait that gets me where I need to be, when I don't want to continue.

After two years of constant cursing, sometimes under my breath, but mostly out loud, I managed to overcome the mechanical deficiencies; I got my 1894, working reliably.

Granted, I had to spend a considerable amount of time at the range fighting the "Marlin jams" and reloading various bullets weights and designs but I finally settled on a bullet/powder combo that gives me the recipe to put venison on the table and the gun quit hanging up.

I've fired in the neighborhood of 600 rounds, and after replacing the carrier with one of the "new Style", a stainless barrel plug, There isn't much left in the innards that can be replaced.

I will say, the Wild West Happy Trigger is a great aid in tightening the 5 shot groups. Very smooth and crisp.

I will be heading to the range to fine tune my loads and then I'll stretch it out to 100 yards, so I can have an idea where my bullets print. I limit my shots to a maximum 100 yards, (eyes mainly) mostly because that is where I feel confident, I will make a clean kill at that distance.

Thanks for all of your responses. This where I'm at with my loose front sight;
i called Marlin about my loose front sight issue and they sent me a front ramp replacement. I installed it along with the replacement front sight insert that Marlin had sent previously and I still have loose front sight. So, after doing my due diligence, I've decided on the Skinner 'Winged Front and Rear Sights'. However, I can't seem to get a response from Andy after sending two emails requesting verification that the sights will work with my 1894. Has anybody used the Skinner winged sights on a newer Marlin 1894? Has anyone had problems getting replys from Andy at Skinner sights?
