Good morning members-- new member here from Canada. I have a question that perhaps you can help me with. I recently acquired an old Marlin

Model 27S chambered in .32-20. My question is- what does the small lever do on the right side of the receiver ? Mine doesn't seem to move. Does it have something to do with the take down ? I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum.

Take down lever. Please post a good picture of that rear sight from several angles.

Great Rifle!!

Welcome to the Forum from the northern plains in central North Dakota - where the West begins!

Whereabout are you in Canada? I have a number of Canadian family members from the plains to the lower mainland to northwest BC.

Likely someone over tightened the takedown lever, so you might need to tap it to free it up. I use a piece of hardwood against the levers and tap the wood with a small hammer. Tap it down so it unscrews the tension, and once it moves you can then unscrew it by hand.

Great old Marlin. Just be sure no hot rod 32-20 loads. The 27 was not a strong action for hotter than factory loads of those days. those Hepburn original sights run about 400 us or more. I always felt Marlin dropped the ball on their pumps for not designing a stronger locking shoulder receiver for modern smokeless pressures. Yours is in exceptional shape.
Now you need its little brother, the 20A

Nice! Very Nice. That sight is rarer that the gun. I've been looking for one of those Hepburn sights on the loose for years for a 1894 carbine I have.
I almost bought a gun once just for that sight. Didn't, should have. That is what those 2 little drilled and tapped holes on top of the early Marlin receiver's 94's are for.
I think they started that around 1901-1903. Some here correct me if I'm wrong. I can't remember. LOL
