Found out today in order to date the new marlins aka rems you need to date the barrel like you would a Remington gun the roll marks are the same

JG, welcome to the forum from the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee! Your 1895 should look similar to mine, the bottom rifle in my signature photo. It was also made in 2005, a great year! Make yourself at home, we are glad you joined us!

I have just discover this thread and am happy to join everyone. I have been reading the first portion of the posts on how to tell the age of your Marlin. I just purchased an 1895 from a private party that never even fired it from the purchase date. I have fired it about 10 times to make sure it was sighted in and love it so far. I am excited to take it hunting this next year. The serial number on mine starts with 06 so I believe that it was manufactured in 1994 if I am correct and it does have the JM proof mark. Also I believe that it has the straight stock and not the pistol grip stock if someone can help me verify. I am thinking about updating the lever to a large loop so it would be easier to operate in really cold weather. Has someone had any experience with this and would you recommend this. Thanks in advance for your reply's and help.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes you have dated her correctly 06 would make it 95. Treat her well and have fun.

Another 45/70 Model 1895 Rem-lim or Marly-Rem

Just bought my Marlin 1895 GBL last week . And waiting for Cali ban wait period to really check it out. One of those buys when it comes cheap grab and hope to hell it was as good buy as you thought. It did have JM on Barrel and fit was pretty good in most areas. Yes it was used Guy loved it , just wanted something else so he let it go lot cheaper than most places and gun shops. So I took it after quick looing it over, never thought to ask what year he bought it although he did say he was first owner and had it couple years. I've owed in past 3 different old Model Marlin 1895's back in day we knew quality was good always on Marlins. And I did shoot them lot with different hand loads. What seemed to me the Mule kicker was one with 24 inch barrel straight grip hard plastic butt plate. With light loads wasn't bad 300 gr. -350 Gr. But 425 -500 grs made you wish you would put rubber butt plate on it next time but you never did. No longer have them , in those days I had to sell something to get something new times still have not changed . Some of you guys know the program as Wife dishes it out. Sort of Controller at the company. New one went with sell off old Glock , I no longer needed kinda Roster Cogburn deal one hand gun one Rifle don't have horse anymore so ATV will due to passing time. New one Number are in RM80xxxxC range not sure Year made . Have read good-bad-ugly things about the RM REM Marlin GBL's and others but no going back on deal. Sorry I 've even had to eat one or two in my life but Deal is Deal , you shake hands he goes his way with money and you wait to go yours with the Dream Prize for day or even week to stretch it to month or even life time. :vollkommenauf:. I'm sure some of you know where I'm at. Thanks Ben

Welcome to M.O. forum! That's a genuine good ol' JM Marlin 45-70 ya have there!

If you want to shoot Hornady "gummy tips" in your rifle, buy a new style concave magazine follower. Marlin sells them. Marlins is made of red Delrin. and work & last just fine.

There are some metal ones (SS, aluminum, brass) aftermarket concave metal followers also made if you prefer metal.

The concave magazine follower will allow you to shoot both Hornady LeveRevolution (MonoFlex and FTX "Gummy Tips") as well as other brands of JHP, and lead WFN ammo without having feeding and or ejection problems.

It is very simple & easy to change/swap out the magazine follower on Marlin Lever Actions. And can be done in less than 10 minutes.

Thanks!

Good tip from you, Thank you! I apriciate all your knowledge about this amazing guide gun in the big bore 45-70 cal. Well English is not my native language so some words will be wrong spelled and/or wrong tempus. I do think you will get it anyway GB45

I will check the what magazine follower my gun has when I get it home in about 3 weeks. I was looking for a way to find out the manufacturing year of my Marlin 1895G, and some one told me about this forum. Thanks a lot for the welcome and this tip MarlinManCB45/70.

Regards / doohan

Heck Doohan, I am from the South and some folks in this country don't understand our style of the English language either!!! Hope you know I was laughin' with ya and not at ya . . . !!

Welcome to MO and what is your native tongue? Myself I was raised with the Spanish language and could not speak English when I started school in 1st grade in Florida. Now most of my family call me the CRACKER - slang for a Southern Hick because I have nothin' but a Southern accent and most people don't even know I am a full blooded Spaniard....
