What I wrote to Hornady on Dec. 7:

“I do not see .444 Marlin Light Magnum 265 gr. FN ammo listed on the website. Has this ammunition been discontinued?

I hope it has not been discontinued. It is the yardstick by which all .444 ammo is measured. LE has it's place but the 265 FN LM ammo is desired by many.”

The reply I got (unsigned) from Hornady today:

“Richard,

I’m sorry to say we have discontinued the LM line of Ammunition. We are coming out with a new line called superformance. For more information on this line of Ammo, please go www.hornady.com. Thank you.”

I say, “Whatever!”

I suppose we will see what Hornady has to offer in the way of superperformance ammo for the .444 Marlin…some day. ???

I checked the web site and the "Superformance" ammo does not list anything for 444 Marlin. I'm glad someone pointed out that it was discontinued earlier. I was able to get 2 more boxes to add to my stash. ;D Not much of a stash but 5 boxes is better than none. Still think the 444 LE is crap. :p Rick

Now Rick...tell us what you really think about the .444 LE. ;D ;D

Seaweaver,

They still (for now, at least) offer the 265 gr. FN bullet as a component. They dropped the loaded ammo in Light Magnum configuration which used the 265 gr. FN bullet. The only loaded ammo that Hornady lists for the .444 Marlin at the present time is the LeverEvolution with 265 gr. FTX bullet. Many folks have reported that their older Marlins do not prefer the LE ammo as evidenced by mediocre accuracy.

Life is full of compromises and I can adapt. I will miss the factory Light Magnum ammo but I can load my own with 265 gr. FN. Or maybe I will switch to a Beartooth Bullets gas check .432" cast bullet. ;D

Hornadys new superformance ammo is a matter of sales. Most of the local shops in my area say it ( light mag) did not move very well. The .444 is a low production round. If they get enough calls and e-mails the round will go back in production.

I've been seeing "Hornady custom rifle ammunition" in .444 Marlin 265 Gr. FP.

Did they just put it in a new box? and they are on back order so it probably isn't available

I read the article in Guns & Ammo today on the Superformance (or some such ridiculous name) that is replacing the light mag. Seems like this is going to help out those that shoot factory 270, 30-06, 243 and such, but I see no mention of the lever action chamberings. I think Hornady has chosen to go with the LeverEvolution loadings in those calibers.

Again, they are using powders not available to the general public. Getting about 200+ fps more out of the 30-06 and 270 loadings with less pressures.

My .30-06 has been working just fine.
They are getting over 3000 fps with the 165 gr and over 3100 fps with the 150 gr. I get 3025 fps with my handload for the 150 gr BT, so is 100 fps going to make a difference? At $40/box?

Mostly I use factory loaded 165 grain Remington Core-Lokts which kill like the hammer of Thor.

Quick aswer Halwg,NO. Don't get me wrong, they sound like good strong loads but like Swampman said I have never had a problem with my 30-06 not dropping animals with normal loads. I thought their old Light Magnum stuff achieved these velocities? You seem to read a lot of posts about people trying to soup up their 45/70,30-06etc. to try and get "Magnum" performance, problem is this tends to be hard on the gun and on the brass. In my opinion if you want magnum performance there are plenty for sale. A 300 WM for example will spit that 165 gr. slug out at 3000fps with no pressure concerns at all(with the right powder of course).
Back to the topic though, I can't remember the last time I bought a packet of factory rounds for any of my guns but I can see how the 444lm load getting dropped would annoy people that don't reload, that 265gr. H'dy is a very good bullet.
