I've been deer hunting since 1977/78...taken many a buck with above the shoulder spine and neck shots. I hate tracking deer, but I do own a good beagle. I was just wondering what the rest of ya'll do.
I got this spike this evening with a neck shot. He dropped where he stood like i've seen them do many, many times.

No! Behind the shoulder.....through the lungs! There is a lot of “slowly lethal” area in a neck shot. Many folks love the head shot. Once you’ve found a deer, too weak to stand from dehydration caused by a shot destroying the lower jaw.....I would hope it would stop anyone from making (attempting) head shots! memtb

Squeeze the trigger many times and you will get bad shot, it is inevitable. Even best of the best miss their shot sometime and then there is animal suffering and you get that dreaded tracking. Spine and head shots are no no to me, aim to big vitals and there is more room for error and still get that humane kill without need to shoot again.

When I was young, and my eye was really sharp, yes, I did neck shots. Now I'm over 70 and I hit them behind the shoulder, through the lungs and the arteries on top of the heart. Bigger aiming area, I've never owned a scope, so it's a good iron (peep) sight shot to about 100 long paces. Some run a little ways, 30 or 40 yards, but most drop on the spot. The lung shot leaves a good blood trail on both sides, blood out and air in, so they die quickly and as painlessly as possible.

My buddy was about 20 ft up shooting down with a 6mm one day and he shot a small buck in the neck and down it went only to bounce up and stumble back in the brush we never did find the buck and we looked hard. We figured it just got the meat part of the neck and missed the bone. The neck shot is deadly usually but there is room for error if not done correctly.

Shot this guy with a 45-70. While dressing him out found that 1/2 the heart was gone and he still ran 20 yards. The problem is he went over a bluff and getting him out was a real #$*%. That neck shot would have made things easier.

I don't think most people do. Until recently checked in about 200 deer a year at our club, from about 70 hunters, and almost never saw a neck shot. I surmise most folks go for a mid shoulder shot, because it gives the largest margin for error. None standard shots to the: brain, neck, frontal brisket, shots angled in to hit the heart lungs from the paunch and Texas heart shots, where far and away the exception and generally came from the more experienced hunters.

i went to a buddy's management lease day before yesterday. saw a lot of deer but none that was on the hit list, and every deer i saw was between 3 and 400 yards away. hell, his feeders are 200 yards from the stands out there. im not as young and steady as i used to be... im not so sure ill try a neck shot when i shoot a deer out there. usually when i get into that situation i go for that elmer kieth shot, aim for the spine above the shoulder.

I missed a neck shot when I was a kid. The deer was full broad side. I moved the shot from the body to the neck and pulled it. I have always waited for a good shot since.

Took two deer already this year with neck shots---both were DRT. Since this was the only shot the deer gave me in the thick timber---it worked out just fine.

Ive had great success with neck shots and use them regularly. A couple years ago i switched to a handload of a Lehigh Defense 176 grain controlled fracturing projectile over 8.5 grain of Lil Gun. Its fantastic for neck shots. It has 3 petals that break off to create separate wound channels while the base keeps moving straight

The problem with neck and head shots is if the deer doesn't drop on the spot the shooter just figured they missed. Just finished off a buck 2 days ago that was laying down in my grandmothers yard. When gutting him was looking for other bullet holes. When I couldn't find any I figured he ran himself to death. Nope. Flipped him over and a bullet hole beneath his eye.

Seen too many blown off jaws for me to ever try those shots. And EVERYONE misses no matter what they say
