Ain't this some BS! ATF claims airgun suppressors are regulated...

Are paintball and airgun sound suppressers considered NFA weapons?

The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.
Numerous paintball and airgun silencers tested by ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch have been determined to be firearm silencers by nature of their design and function. Because silencers are NFA weapons, an individual wishing to manufacture or transfer such a silencer must receive prior approval from ATF and pay the required tax.

According the ATF ninnies it is.
The really crazy part is their use of the word "nature of design".
I wonder if they feel like they're really protecting people...

There was an issue maybe 20 years ago where a guy was manufacturing and selling “airgun” suppressors. Well they fit and worked beautify on a 22, maybe that was the business model. As they say, bad facts make bad law, in this case the term “airgun” got into the case in an attempt to get the suppressors excluded from regulation, it failed. Anyway, that’s how I remember it.

Today aren’t most airgun suppressors designed to thread onto a shroud rather than a barrel? I assume that’s the reason.

bb guns, air rifles and bb handguns have been considered firearms in NJ for decades, it's absolutely ridiculous. We have to fill out the same paperwork for a bb pistol as we do for a 50 cal desert eagle. BP is highly regulated here, too.

When silenced pellet guns first came out, nj didn't notice and many were sold for almost a couple years. After the state caught on, they lost their minds and threatened up to 20 years in prison for not turning in a slightly quieter bb gun.

Hard to believe NJ was one of the original 13 colonies in the cradle of freedom. We are basically tax slaves to the socialist democrats now.

Ya, they are starting to get picky about airguns with "Silencers"....some of them are now permanently fixed to the barrel.
The airguns (airguns are not firearms... there is no fire) with barrel shrouds seem exempt.
In the airgun world we do not use the term "suppressor" or "silencer" .... the term is "Lead Dust Collector" or LDC for short.
The barrel thread is different on airguns than it is on firearms.
The ATF shut done DonnyFL in Florida for manufacturing/selling airgun LDCs..... he was closed for about a year and I think now is back selling them only to dealers. You used to be able to order direct... but now option is gone.
LDCs for airguns are made different than the ones made for firearms..... the airgun LDCs don't last long if you adapt them to a firearm.
Whole thing is getting out of hand.

Jeeze I can't believe that you are getting worse over there that it is over here.
In England and Wales (Not the Nazi state of Scotland) Airguns are not considered firearms and can be fitted with a sound moderator without any issues. We are even talking about removing full-bore sound moderators from being a firearm that needs to be registered. See if that one goes ahead with the threat of a socialist gubmint coming to power.
Scotland raised the status of ALL airguns to the status of Firearm years ago, and they now have to be licenced to own one. This was all due to a scumbag Scottish druggie who shot and killed a young lad with an air rifle ................. and then stood up and demanded that air rifles should be licensed.............and was listened to by the stupid nationalist party in Scotland. There was no real public information published up there and many ordinary people who weren't really shooting people were caught out owning an illegal airgun. A couple of years ago an normal decent man was reported for shooting a squirrel that was destroying his loft. The police arrived and arrested him and he was sentenced to a term in prison,,,,,,for owning a firearm without a licence.
Our licensing system used to be really efficient until a couple of years ago when the police were being de-funded. They then started to take resources away from gun licensing and using it elsewhere, making it a nightmare for anyone trying to take out a new Firearms certificate or even renew their old one. Some police forces were taking as long as a year to issue one, whilst some were even refusing to issue new ones as it was to much work (HAH!!!!) for them.

Shame to see what Scots have become - and I'm a clan member!

There doesn't seem to be any ryme or reason why they go after a company making and selling airgun LDCs. Kinda of like when the ATF comes to your door and says "we hear you have a lot of firearms... and we would like to look at them!"
1/2-20 is the airgun thread. I had one of those LDCs but accidentally dropped it overboard last summer while crossing the lake with my FIL.

From what I read on the internet... might be true or not.......In one case the ATF confiscated a firearm that had an airgun silencer on it which had the name of the manufacture on it, and went there (Florida) and shut down the operation. They claimed if the silencer could be made to fit a firearm it was illegal. Didn't matter who modified it.

It used to be that if the airgun "moderator" could be removed and used on a firearm, it was subject to ATF regulation. Airgun makers moved to permanently attached shrouds, permanent muzzle attachments, or making the suppressor out of a material that would not survive any powder-burning ammo or any attempt to remove it from the airgun.
That actually makes sense - but - they don't say that on the ATF site so they can choose to prosecute and voila, no 2A for you!

Well there was a time when Maxim built silencers that had 1/2-20 tpi, and guns still exist that have that thread pitch on them too. I happen to own an 1891 Remington .22 Target pistol that is threaded 1/2-20tpi for a silencer. This was done for indoor matches often in occupied buildings so the shooting didn't bother others nearby.

^^^ Yep. 2 years ago I wanted a BSA PCP .22.... but the ones available in America had a plastic molded-on silencer...molded right on to the nice hammer-forged barrel. You had to cut it off.
So I decided to buy it from Kraleshop in the Netherlands... they still sold the threaded barrel version.
Ordered 2am on a Tuesday morning.. UPS delivered it to my front door on Thursday at 4pm.
How do they do that?
Without a moderator it has the crack of a 22 rimfire.
