I have a 1894 in .357 and am thinking about doing some hog hunting. Using this as an excuse to buy another gun, can't have enough. I'm looking at a 336SS in 30-30, would this be a good choice or should I look at a different caliber?
Thinking the 30-30's are pretty easily found so it would be a good caliber to get. I also will be shooting factory ammo, don't have the time to reload as of now.

Is there any certain 30-30's that I should stay away from, certain model # I should look for?

Thanks.

Since last summer, I've been on a roll... a personal "one shot counts" game, if you will.
So far, I've had 11 hogs with 11 shots, weighing from 50 pounds to about 200, and one bigger, maybe 250.

My favorite hog gitters are open sighted (a '47 model 36 and a '49 model 336), stoked with heat treated, low antimony Ranch Dog slugs, pushed by 25-26 grains of Reloader 7.

Since giving my brother a Marlin, he's joined the game and is now 3 hogs for three shots... while eating breakfast one morning... using my same ammunition.
He's found the 30-30 so much fun and so effective, that I doubt he'll ever get out his .270 browning again. I have trouble keeping him in ammunition!

The fun factor is important... 30-30 muzzle blast is modest and recoil is very mild, contributing to very reliable shot placement. Coupled with a devestating effect on game and you have a fun factor which also stuffs the smoker....

One shot through the shoulders anchors 'em every time.
