I was looking for a deer rifle and stumbled on this beauty in my LGS. Gun looks new except for added recoil pad. Never owned a 270 but look forward to getting it out and shooting it. Figured for $749 out the door I couldn't go wrong with a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 that is almost 70 years old in this condition. I was gonna pay the same or more for a new rifle that would not be anywhere near this quality.

Where deer hunters gather the pre 64 Model 70 is the only rifle I know of that creates awe from other hunters when it is taken out of the gun case. Not everyone has one but everyone seems to know what they are. Truly a classic that has passed the test of time. That's a good price you gave, they usually go for 4 to 600 dollars more in good shape.

I thought it was cheap too. It was a consignment gun and I think the old man selling it was needing money. Gun shop owner told me the old man's dad was the original owner. No scratches and very little wear on the blue and no noticeable dings on the stock. I don't think he shot it more than a few times. Wish it had original butt-plate, which is another reason i got it cheaper, but i'm gonna shoot it, so i will probably be glad it has it at the range. He had another Winchester Model 71 levergun made in 1949 on sale that was mint he would take $1200 for. I would love to have it too, but ammo is ridiculous for that thing. .348 win is >$2.00/rd unless you hand-load it.

I just picked one up myself. It's not pre 64 but I love it.
Pick up a few boxes' of 30-06 this afternoon. Going to shoot it this weekend.
Took the bolt apart, Cleaned and lube it appears to be unfired. Mint not a mark on it.
It need's a little trigger work,to heavy, I'm going to order lighter spring I saw on you tube
It cut's the weight in about half. I always wanted a model 70.
Good luck with yours it's a beauty!

I've got a Model 70 in 30.06 but it's not a pre 64. But it's interesting where I got it. A very good buddy and I were deer hunting about 10 years ago. We were driving out on a dirt road and heading for home on Sunday afternoon. My buddy stopped to make a sandwich. So we're sitting on the tailgate eating and looking down the hill next to the road. My buddy says what's that shiny thing down there. I got my binoculars out and about 100 yards down the hill was a rifle leaning on a tree. Well we hiked down there, and we looked for the owner for about 2 hours all over the area , but couldn't find anyone. We yelled, we drove up and down the road looking for a vehicle. But there was nobody around. We took the GPS coordinates, picked up the rifle and went to the closest sheriff's office and reported it. We thought that maybe the owner was hurt and couldn't yell out? The sheriff took all the information and our contact info and said he would look in to it. about three months later my buddy got a call from the sheriff, he said they couldn't track down the owner and to come get your rifle. My friend was about 78 years old, he called me and said I don't need or want it so I ended up with a very nice looking rifle.

Pre 64 M70 Win is the best American made BA rifle that has ever been built. It the rifle others were measured by. First new rifle I got when I was 14 in 1964. Rifle is actually a 1963. It came from a business that I-70 construction was taking out. Still have it a 308 FW.
At one time I was in m70 mode and had a bunch of them.
