I've looked at all my manuals and looked online and I can't find any published data for a 550 gr bullet. I purchased these bullets from Ranger Rick years ago and never loaded them. He sent along a sheet with a charge that he worked up using 2400 powder but I lost that some time ago. Jae-Bok Young says he sells his 550 gr Crater bullets with published data from Lyman. I'll be damned if I can find it. Any help here as to where I can find this data? I'm assuming that the COL would be 2.550 as Mr. Young sells his bullets for the Marlin Guide Gun.

The Lyman Cast Bullet book does not show 2400 but I can give you some beginning for other powders and these are trapdoor loads so adjust from there. And yes depending on bullet shape the max would be 2.550. Load one and set it at 2.550 and see if you have a problem chambering and adjust down if necessary. Don't crimp it. Just set it at 2.550 and chamber it, check for rifling at the end then see if it ejects. You may have to go down just a little.

SR-4759 23.0gr to 25.5gr 1057fps to 1224fps
5744 25.2gr to 28.0gr 1096fps to 1234fps
IMR4198 28.5gr to 31.5gr 1210fps to 1332fps
IMR3031 35.0gr to 39.0gr 1155fps to 1337fps
IMR4895 37.5gr to 41.5gr 1127fps to 1300fps
Varget 39.5gr to 44.0gr 1199fps to 1359fps

These are all trapdoor loads so you can increase a little but you may find that pushing that big of a bullet you may achieve good accuracy with these loads. I'm sure someone will come along to give you some data using 2400 powder. These loads are for a 540gr bullet but you should be more than safe using any one of these loads for your 550gr bullet.

Beartooth has published max loads for their 525 gr bullets. Marshall's recommendation was to back off 10% and work up from there. At 41 gr RL-7, I'm getting an avg of 1628, with a published max of 44.3 gr RL7. Starting load for RL-7 on his table is (a calculated) 39.9. You could back off of that starting load by another 5-10%, giving you a starting load of 36. Keep in mind the BTB are gas checked.

36 gr is the published starting trapdoor load for 535 gr in Lyman #50. Chamber pressure is 10,600, velocity is 1230 fps. Starting loads for the 535 line up with Bill's info on 540 gr bullets within about a grain or so.

If you're prone to being super conservative, Western's published starting load for 5744 and 535 gr Lyman postells is 20.1 gr.
