I am looking to purchase a marlin 336 ser# 72xxxxx2.
I read that to determine year subtract first two digits from 100.
This being the case on guns made in 1973 and later. So what year would
ser# starting with 72 be?

Being a newbe I have a follow up question on year of manufacture. Does the 100 - first two numbers of serial still hold for 2000 to present?

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture can be determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

Yes up until 2010. 00= 2000, 99= 2001..........................91=2009, I can not confirm, but have seen 91 also said to be 2010 this was during the transition from Marlin to Remington years, then in 2011 Remington production serial numbers start with MR, I am unsure how you date the MR serial numbers.

Thank you for this information

I have 5 more weeks before I make my purchase. I do not know if I will purchase new or used. I have read reports about new 336w being a good gun. Year of manufacture was not mentioned. I have not read much about the 336c so do not know. If I purchase new I would like to purchase something made in 2013 so I guess the serial would begin with 87xx. For 2010 the serial would be 90xx.

Again thanks for the feed back

Check the guys selling on here. They are more times than not very nice condition and better priced than most anywhere else. You need 25 post to sell, but I believe you can buy with any amount.

I heard, but can't confirm 2010 stayed 91, just like 2009. For 2013 it will start with MR not 83.
