XL7 30.06 Question

1154 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Xlr8n
I am new to the forum and have several questions about a future purchase.
Does the XL7 in 30.06 use microgroove rifling? I use bore-riding nosed, gas-checked cast bullets for both plinking and for working newer shooters into larger calibers. Will this rifle shoot these bullets with acceptable accuracy (2" @ 50 yards)?
I have been reading about the downturn in quality since the take-over by Remington. Has it also affected this rifle?
I will need to order a rifle as my local dealers who I choose to support are very small shops and I'd like to know what I'm getting into.
Thank you for your reply.

The "X" guns use button rifling just like Savage does. I see no issues with cast bullets.

As far as the "remington" Marlins, I guess it would depend on who your local shop gets the gun from. Some Wholesalers may have old stock and you could get a Conn. Marlin. All 4 of my "X" guns were made in Conn., so I can't speak personally to any Remington QC issues.

How do you know where your "X" gun was made?

If it's a Remington barrel it will have a "rem" stamped on it, I'm not sure if it's stamped in the stock area or outside so it's exposed though.
If it's an original Marlin made barrel, it'll have "JM" stamped near the receiver.
Ah, thanks. Is it safe to assume that one barrel is of higher quality than another?
I guess we are going to have to start a new thread on if your Rem. barreled Marlin is as accurate as the Marlin original barrels, what do you think? Maybe it should be a poll?
It'd make an interesting topic. I picked up a magazine last night that had a test of the new Marlin X7S and it seemed to have groupings with factory ammo similar to those of the Marlin made barrels.

(according to the article, apparently ReMarlin is no longer going to define the action length of the X guns as XS or XL. They are now all simply being X7's along with the suffix for stock or finish)
I asked this question because I noticed a lot of the lever action shooters were very unhappy with the quality of the guns coming out of Remington. Apparently this has not been the case with the bolt guns. Thank you to all who responded. This is a wonderful place to get good information. I'm looking forward to getting my XL7.
Welcome,to MO, from Myrtle Beach,S.C. I have a "Remlin" X gun, and it shoots great, just my .02. T REX

And I've also seen some report their new Rem lever guns being nicer finished that the previous Marlin versions. Need to take it all with a grain of salt imho.
Remington setting up the tooling to re-start production of another manufacturer's weapon without a hiccup is likely no easy task.
