There are some specialty reloaders and they usually have a minimum of so many boxes of ammo. And its probably an expensive brass casing. Don't get discouraged and research for loaders who may already have the components. I used to have a guy in Arizona do my old magnum stuff it was expensive. In the 1990s was like a minimum of $200+ for three boxes of 20 but they were ultra long range cartridges. But you would only need three boxes or so most likely. Laser bore sight the rifle first with a ballistic program if you can. Just check the drop at 25 yards for your cartridge and mark it for 25 yards (if any) some cartridges rise at 25. That will get you on paper if you are spending $5-10 a round. One you get it setup you'll only need a fee cartridges each year to sight in and get an animal.

Oh yes get steel scope mounts and ensure they use good nyloc thread fastener. I avoid loctite but permatex makes their own version of nyloc. And I second Leupold Scopes: only 4x unless you plan to glass the plains or glass for elk across the mountains I would say 10x scope. Make sure to get a scope model that is rated for magnums. Good luck!

Finding ammo or brass can be tough for a new owner of a .450 today. I've owned two .450 Marlins and still have one (BLR). Perhaps some folks here can help you at least find some loaded ammo or brass to get you started.

As far as a good scope to mount on it, both mine wore Leupolds, a 1-4 and a 1.25-4. Depending on the loads you choose to use, I'd be sure that any scope you consider gives at least a full 4" of eye relief. The Leupold FXII in 2.5x would also be a great choice for short to moderate ranges as it has 5" of eye relief IIRC. The two Hornady factory loads were all I ever used (and still use) and they are relatively stout loads; a 325gr @ 2225 FPS and a 350gr @ 2150 FPS, so be sure and get a scope with enough eye relief.

Hornaday is making ammo for the .450 Marlin. I do not know the run dates but have picked up 4 boxes from my LGS's since about February. 325 gr FTX. Its a matter of keep looking. It is not cheep. I paid around $50.00 per box out the door.

60ish a box but you have to search around.... Please don't re-barrel.....

The factory hornady 350gr has a lot less recoil than the Buffalo bore 405’s at nearly 2000fps. If handloading, I’d load the 405’s around 1600fps or less if going after deer. 2000fps isn’t needed in the 405’s unless you’re hunting really big mean stuff.

Welcome to the forum!

Be patient when it comes to finding factory ammunition and/or reloading components. If you or your husband know someone who reloads rifle ammunition, get with them and learn how to reload. I have a few friends that come to my house to reload their ammunition on my equipment. They are new to reloading, and I enjoy helping them learn the ropes.

Were those new inventory at your LGS or had they been sitting on the shelf covered in dust?
I haven't seen any evidence that Hornady has produced 450 Marlin recently. I do check Ammo-seek regularly.

have it rebarreled to 45-70 and it will live forever.
It would require a lot more work than just a re-barrel. There are quite a few internal dimension differences between the two receivers.
Welcome from South Florida! What is/are your husbands and your gun/shooting/hunting/reloading education/experience? Something he grew up with or just gettin’ started with this gun?

I understand that, I had a 450 legend rebarreled to 45-70

New boxes - no dust. Same load Hornady has on their website. As I commented I do not know run dates for Hornady. It was a matter of walking in and on the shelve. Not there last week but was the day I walked in. Was talking to the the one person that orders ammo for this store - he gets a list of available ammo from his supplier, more like a broker, same mail goes to who knows how many other stores and he checks off what he wants and slams order in. About 6 weeks ago there was 6 boxes of Hornady in .35 Remington on the list and I am on his radar to order for me if possible. He got the order form but was at lunch and saw it about an hour after it was sent. Another store had already grabbed the .35 Remington. I have been on Ammo-seek but do not know if they deal with every LGS in the USA. Does anyone know how Ammo-seek works or how they get their information?
Being a belted case, forming cases from most any belted mag case should be fairly easy. Trim case to a little long. Size in the 450 Marlin die, trim to length. Load and shoot to fire form.
The belt on the .450 is a uniquely sized belt and cannot be formed from any other belted magnums.
