What's Your Favourite Alround 45-70 load?

I have quite a few but if I was restricted to one bullet and one load it would be a 350gr. hand cast (hard cast) Ranchdog bullet loaded atop 54gr. of AR2207 (H4198) which gives 2190fps. I use Starline cases with Federal 210 primers.
Of course there are others which are so close for me it's not funny. You know 405gr. Remington, 350 Hornady, 425gr. Ranchdog cast, etc.
Come on let's hear yours.

My favorite everyday round has slowly evolved to 405gr RNFP Suters Choice (no gas check) over 34gr of IMR4198, Starline brass, CCI large rifle primer, and about 3/4 turn on the Lee FCD.

I still hunt with factory 325LE but am working on a good homemade mix for the 325gr FTX bullet for this coming deer season. Gonna use once-fired LE brass with IMR4198.
That's what i like to see some experimentation.
Faveriote load for me to shoot. 400gr cast, 25gr 2400, ww case, cci 200 primer. 1300fps

Faveriote load for me to 'watch' someone else shoot. 400gr Speer, 55gr H322, ww case, cci 200 primer. 1984 fps. ;D
I love threads like this! Just getting started in .45-70, and haven't started reloading yet, but plan to soon. I have the Win brass (50rd bag + 1 box of Win factory loads), and the Rem 9 1/2 primers, and a friend is giving me a 405gr mold (Lyman 457193), so all I need now is the black powder and a drop tube! Oh! and the dies. Really looking forward to it! :D
This is my "use for everything", HUNTING load. Caveat, the bullets are expensive, AND hard to find.

300 gr. nosler part.
51 gr. H4198
WW brass
Fed. 210 primers

vel. out of my GG, 1950 fps.

I've used this load on hogs, bear, and 7 head of African plains game. It has never failed me.

Hey Seabass,
Any reason why you are using 2400 instead of what my manuals typically recommend for 45-70 and 400-405 lead? I've seen a lot of members raving about that load but I worry about powder position for a smaller volume like that. My Lyman manual doesn't list 2400 at all for any level of 45-70 loading.

I want to try a few of your load but have been putting it off for that reason. Sounds like a load my wife would like in your 1895G but my IMR4198 load already hits that mark pretty closely.

Just curious.
I've been mostly shooting 300gr hollow point bullets pushed by 50gr of IMR 3031. Depending on your barrel length it is somewhere around 1600fps. I have used bulk bullets of unknown manufacture and the Hornady bullet, both are very accurate. The recoil is modest even firing from sand bags on a bench.

I've only introduced this load to one deer...and he was impressed. ;D
hi guys,...i have made up a few loads, but have settled on the 550 grainers from Jae-bok,,,,Craters!...the places i hunt shots are usally 100 yards of less, and if further i just try to get closer!...yep, had to have to pass on some animals a few times--too far :p!!.....starline brass, 40 grains of H322 gives me about 1530 fps in the GG.....larry
25gr. of 2400 and a 400gr. pill is not anything new. It came from Lyman's volumes of the past. Think the last one to have it was #47. There is new data being generated by Alliant as we speak using many of the powders they have and yet do not list including 2400. Perhaps this will settle all the controversy. Suffice it to say those of us that have shot these for years continue to do so and do not use fillers. Its ideal for me cause I can cast a booit and NOT use a gas check. It clearly does the job well. This 300# pig switched ends with its butt in the air when I shot it with this load 3 weeks ago. I can't imagine wanting something else for hogs. Maybe something for longer range??? Its also much more enjoyable to shoot, and will keep you from flinching, while shooting much more.

wow, Dr A .... SWEET!!...that there is on my bucket list!! ;D.......congrats on a beauty!!...larry :)
Hi Larry,
I use the exact same load and bullet for Asiatic Buffalo and scrub bulls (they are huge here in Oz), unfortunately they are a long way away and it is not very often that I get away to shoot them. Thats why I have picked the 350gr ranchdog as it is my most usefull load.

hi moofy....whats the load you use for them?....craters or Docs 400 grain pill'?.....i see i have alot of catching up to do on this forum,,,,lots of big animals shot here in the last fewyears!! ;D....COOL!!....lary
Hi Larry,
For the JB Young's Craters 550gr it is 40gr ADI AR2219 (which is exactly the same as H322) Starline brass and Federal 210 primers with a Lee fc die with 1/2 turn crimp it gives me 1525 fps. (RCBS chrono). To me it is a VERY stout load, but manageable.

Its an old load, been around along time. I'm sure its in Lynman's manual. It doesn't need a filler, is accurate and low recoil. I've put hundreds thru my rifle without issue. Many others will confirm this.
having only used my 45-70 as a woods gun for bambi ...my favorite load is very mild and cheap yet very very accurate and effective....50gr of Rel-7 in WW brass and CCI large rifle primers pushing the 300gr Remington HP's that I got 1000 of in bulk back in 1989...they print groups that are 1 hole clovers at 100yds and they are exiting my 22" barreled 1895SS at 2000fps nearly on the button...every animal taken down has not even twitched...one recovered bullet on a large hog hit in the front shoulder was found after a 115yd shot ..the core was against his pelvis after shedding the core about 8" before it came to rest...so i'm confident in shooting most anything heavy and edible
My favorite load is with the Nosler 300 gr PP with 60 grs H 322 in a R-P case with a Federal GM210M primer.

Sofar, my favorite load from my 1895G is 40 gr. of Reloader 7 in R-P cases, Federal 210 primers and Cast Performance 405 gr WLNGC bullets.
It prints 5 shots to a cloverleaf at 50 yards.

I shot a wild hog (not boar) last Thursday with this load.
A hunting buddy standing a few feet away from me, said that when I hit that big old sow, her body shook like a rock hitting a pond.
Just a big RIPPLE from head to toe.
I hit her right behind her right shoulder, and she shuddered and dropped. She didn't take one step.

The guide 'guesstimated' her weight as between 320 and 350 lbs, and 'dressed' weight at between 280 and 300 lbs.
Can't wait to see how much pork I get back from the butcher!!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. . . . bacon! ;D

Everything is better with bacon. Kevin Bacon would never have been a star if his name wasn't...well you know....Bacon.

Definitely, City Slicker. Don't forget Roger Bacon and Francis Bacon, as well.
