The model 1889 was a black powder gun with a slightly different bolt lock up. It was discontinued and replaced by the 1894. NOW which one is better? The 1894 can handle high pressure loads that the 1889 can not. Myself...I love the old rifles and have owned a model 1889. What one is better is a matter of opinion. I will take the 89 any day!
