My mate has a go with the 45-70. Luckily he's a solid 6'5" so he soaked up the recoil quite nicely!

Not a particularly heavy load (405gr bullet over 51gr N140) but as you can see he was shooting it lightly-held with no fore-end grip.

Fair to say it does have a bit of a recoil. What would one hunt in Whales with that caliber? Deer? Elk? Do you have bears?

Watching the video again it looks like you have an octagonal barrel cowboy gun - super.

I have never shot a .45-70 rifle but have shot a shotgun,other than that a lot of large cal. revolvers namely .45-70.
Just keep the pad tight against the shoulder and enjoy...I hope!
